New Delhi, Nov 01 (CMC) : Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Tuesday took a dig at Team Anna on its decision to return around Rs 42 lakhs to donors who had sent money to them during the last six months.





"Super Team Anna to do an impossible Act. Return 40 Lakhs to unknown Donors. Only the Super Heroes can collect from unknown and return them," Singh said in a twitter post. 


Singh's remarks came as Team Anna decided to return Rs 42.55 lakh to donors who "did not provide their complete details and their sources of funding". 


In another post, he took a swipe at Sri Sri Ravishankar's anti-corruption campaign launched in Karnataka.


"Sri Sri Ravishankar on the Roll in UP against corruption ! Again I have been proved correct. Anna/Gadkari want me to go to mental asylum..Charity begins at home. Shouldn't Sri Sri Ravishankar have begun his campaign from Karnatak ? But then, love is blind!," Singh said. 


Ravi Shankar had yesterday said his proposed tour to Uttar Pradesh is a regular satsang (religious gathering) and has no "ulterior motive or political agenda".

Mumbai, Nov 1 (CMC) Anna Hazare has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Law Minister Salman Khurshid warning that he would resume his hunger strike if the government fails to pass an effective Jan Lokpal Bill in the Winter Session of Parliament.
"I will begin my hunger strike agitation on the last day of the Session, if the Jan Lokpal Bill is not passed in the House," Hazare said in the letter.
His close aide Datta Awari told CMC from Ralegan Siddhi that in the letter, Hazare has reminded the Prime Minister that he had called off his indefinite hunger strike, which he began on August 16 at Ramlila Maidan, following a written assurance from the Prime Minister, which was conveyed to him by Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. He has sent the copy of the same letter to Sonia Gandhi and Khurshid.
"If an effective Jan Lokpal Bill is in place, it would help the country to get rid of corruption and also help utilise more funds towards development work," Hazare has said in the letter.
The 74-year-old activist, who is observing vow of silence at his native village since October 16, had yesterday indicated that he might discontinue the 'maun vrat' over the next couple of days as he wants to hold "open discussions" with his supporters.

Lucknow, Nov 01 (CMC) : In further embarrassment to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, the state Lokayukta on Tuesday ordered a probe against Energy Minister Ramveer Upadhyay in disproportionate assets case.


Upadhyay has been given two weeks time to file his reply, further complicating the problem for BSP in the poll-bound state. 


The Lokayukta has also informed the Chief Minister about the probe.


According to reports, there is strong documentary evidence against Upadhyay including the papers of land that he has acquired with unfair means. 


Upadhyay has also been accused of recommending the release of a noted criminal, the documentary evidence for which is also available.

गुडगांव, एक नवम्बर (सीएमसी) : बीसीसीआई संशोधित खेल विकास विधेयक पर अपनी आपत्तियों से खेल मंत्रालय को अवगत कराएगा। क्रिकेट बोर्ड इस विधेयक को पूरी तरह से नकार चुका है।

 क्रिकेट बोर्ड ने यह कह कर इस विधेयक का विरोध किया था कि इसके कुछ पहलुओं से बीसीसीआई की स्वायत्ता नष्ट हो जाएगी और इसके सदस्यों के अधिकार हल्के पड़ जाएंगे।

अहमदाबाद, एक नवम्बर (सीएमसी) : गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने कहा कि यदि सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल देश के प्रथम प्रधानमंत्री बने होते तो भारत कश्मीर और सांप्रदायिकता जैसे मुद्दों से मुक्त होता।

मोदी ने सरदार पटेल की 136वीं जयंती पर यहां स्थित स्वामीनारायण मंदिर में लोगों को संबोधित करते हुए कहा, ‘यदि सरदार साहब प्रथम प्रधानमंत्री होते तो इस देश में चीजें काफी अलग होतीं। यदि पटेल प्रधानमंत्री होते तो कश्मीर मुद्दा, आतंकवाद, सांप्रदायिकता, किसानों की समस्याएं खड़ी ही नहीं होती अथवा उनका हल निकाल लिया गया होता।’

येदियुरप्पा के खिलाफ जनहित याचिका

बेंगलुरु, एक नवम्बर (सीएमसी) : कनार्टक उच्च न्यायालय में एक जनहित याचिका दायर करके राज्य के गृह विभाग को यह निर्देश देने का अनुरोध किया गया कि कनार्टक जेल नियमावली 1978 के नियमों का कथित उल्लंघन के मामले में मुख्यमंत्री डीवी सदानंद गौड़ा और उनके पूर्ववर्ती बीएस येदियुरप्पा के खिलाफ कानूनी कार्रवाई शुरू की जाए।

 याचिकाकर्ता केएनए रेड्डी ने यह भी अनुरोध किया कि गृह विभाग को जेल परिसर में उपकरणों से बेहतर ढंग से सुसज्जित अस्पताल बनाने का निर्देश दिया जाए ताकि बंदियों को बेहतर चिकित्सा मिल सके और उन्हें इस प्रकार के उपचार के लिए बाहर नहीं जाना पड़े।

 यह याचिका कथित भूमि घोटाले के सिलसिले में गिरफ्तार येदियुरप्पा से सदानंद गौड़ा और उनके कुछ कैबिनेट सहयोगियों के जेल में मिलने जाने की पृष्ठभूमि में आई है।

कालेधन पर श्वेतपत्र लाये सरकार - आडवानी

उडुपी, (कर्नाटक) एक नवम्बर (सीएमसी) : भाजपा के वरिष्ठ नेता लालकृष्ण आडवाणी ने विदेशों में जमा कालेधन को स्वदेश लाने में असफलता के लिए प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह पर निशाना साधते हुए मांग की कि सरकार इस मुद्दे पर संसद के आगामी शीतकालीन सत्र के दौरान श्वेतपत्र लाए।

आडवाणी ने अपनी जनचेतना यात्रा के तहत यहां एक जनसभा को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि डॉ. सिंह विदेशों में जमा 25 लाख करोड़ रुपए के कालेधन को वर्ष 2009 में संप्रग सरकार के दूसरी बार सत्ता में आने के 100 दिन के भीतर वापस स्वदेश लाने का अपना वादा पूरा करने में असफल रहे हैं।

उन्होंने कहा, ‘करीब 700 दिन बीत चुके हैं और 25 लाख करोड़ रुपए को भारत लाने के लिए संप्रग की ओर से कदम के कोई संकेत नहीं मिले हैं। इसलिए मैं मांग करता हूं कि मनमोहन सिंह आगामी शीतकालीन सत्र के दौरान इस मुद्दे पर श्वेतपत्र लेकर आएं।’

आडवाणी ने कहा कि डॉ. सिंह को देश को समझाना चाहिए कि उनकी सरकार ने कालेधन को स्वदेश लाने के लिए क्या कदम उठाए हैं। उन्होंने साथ ही यह भी मांग की कि संप्रग सरकार स्विट्जरलैंड सरकार की ओर से गैरकानूनी परिसम्पत्ति संबंधी समाधान कानून 2011 में मौजूद प्रावधानों का सहारा लेना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा, ‘मैं मांग करता हूं कि केंद्र सरकार को उसी तरह से कालेधन को वापस लाना चाहिए जैसा अमेरिका और जर्मनी कर रहे हैं।’

मुंबई में ही छठ मनाएंगे संजय निरुपम

मुंबई, 01 नवम्बर (सीएमसी) : उत्तरी मुंबई से कांग्रेस सांसद संजय निरुपम ने मंगलवार को जुहू बीच पर छठ पूजा मनाने का ऐलान किया है। मुंबई निकाय चुनाव के मद्देनजर इस साल छठ पर्व का बहुत महत्व दिख रहा है। पर्व को लेकर निरुपम के कई पोस्टर कांदिवली, चारपोक, मलाड, बोरीवली और दहिसार में लगाए गए हैं।

 उत्तर भारतीय के मुद्दे पर निरुपम का शिवसेना और एमएनएस के साथ टकराव चल रहा है। निरुपम ने कहा था कि उत्तर भारतीयों के बिना मुंबई की जिंदगी ठहर सकती है।

 उन्होंने ‘तीनों ठाकरे’ को बिना सुरक्षा व्यवस्था के निकलने की भी चुनौती दी थी। उनका मतलब शिवसेना के कार्यकारी अध्यक्ष उद्धव ठाकरे उनके पुत्र आदित्य तथा एमएनएस प्रमुख राज ठाकरे से था।

 निरुपम और बिहार फ्रंट जुहू बीच पर मनोज बाजपेयी और मनोज तिवारी की मौजूदगी में मंगलवार को छठ पूजा का आयोजन कर रहा है। आयोजकों का दावा है कि इस स्थल पर पिछले 14 साल से पूजा का आयोजन हो रहा है।  बिहार से बाहर देश की वित्तीय राजधानी मुंबई में एक समय शिवसेना ने बिहारी वोटरों को आकर्षित करने के लिए 1999 और 2004 में छठ के आयोजन में मदद की थी, लेकिन मुंबई में छठ को लोकप्रिय बनाने का श्रेय काग्रेस के वर्तमान सासद संजय निरुपम दिया जाता है।

 पहले मुंबई में रहने वाले बिहार के लोग स्वयं को हाशिए पर महसूस करते थे, लेकिन अब छठ के माध्यम से एकजुट महसूस करते हैं। बिहार के रोहतास जिले में जन्मे निरुपम ने शिवसेना में रहते हुए मुंबई में छठ पर्व को एक पहचान दिलाई। बाद में वह 2005 में काग्रेस के सदस्य बन गए।

US soldier gets 10 years in prison for rape

SEOUL, South Korea (CMC) — Reports say that a South Korean court has sentenced a U.S. soldier to 10 years in prison for raping a teenage girl.

Yonhap news agency says that Uijeongbu Districe Court  convicted the 21-year-old private Tuesday of sexually assaulting the girl several times after breaking into her small boarding room near Seoul in September.

YTN television network carried a similar report. Court officials  couldn't immediately confirm the reports.

The Foreign Ministry says the verdict would be the longest prison term for an American solider stationed in South Korea in nearly 20 years.

In 1993, a U.S. soldier was sentenced to life in prison for murdering a South Korean bar employee.

About 28,500 U.S. troops are in South Korea.

Girl set afire for resisting rape, two held

Bulandshahar, Nov 01 (CMC) Two brothers in Bulandshahar were arrested for setting afire their 14-year-old neighbour when she resisted their attempts to rape her, police said. The girl received 70 percent burns and is battling for life in a Delhi hospital.

The girl, a native of Dhakauli village in Bulandshahar was Saturday set ablaze by brothers Mashooq and Ashraf, both in their 20s, while she was alone at her house.

'The incident came to light on Mondey when the victim's father approached us. According to him, the two set her daughter afire when she raised an alarm after they tried to rape her,' police said.

The girl was referred to a hospital in Delhi after her condition deteriorated.

Superhero 'RA.One' flying high with Rs.170 crore collection

Mumbai, Nov 01 (CMC) Shah Rukh Khan’s technolgical masterpiece 'RA.One', one of the most expensive films made in India, has recovered its costs by earning Rs.170 crore worldwide in the opening weekend. The superstar is congratulating his business partners on the superhero's box office success.

Eros international  Media Ltd (Eros International) released the collection report stating that the film has got a record breaking opening - the highly anticipated Diwali collected of Rs. 137.25 crore (net collection Rs. 96 crore) in India and Rs. 32.75 crore overseas.

Apart from this, Shah Rukh Khan had reportedly sold the satellite rights for Rs.37 crore, the music rights for Rs.8 crore and ancillary rights for Rs.10 crore even before the film had hit the screens.

'As always, my heart doesn't crunch numbers and heroes don't count zeros...but it's nice to know how 'Ra.One' is flying,' he further tweeted.

Made at a budget of Rs.150 crore, the film, described as best in terms of technology, opened across more than 4,000 plus screens worldwide - 3,100 plus screens in India and 904 prints internationally, including 3D and has become the biggest Hindi grosser in southern market too.

'Ra. One released to packed houses across the country on Diwali day and has already created history by taking over the mantle of the biggest domestic earner so far. The film continues to be on its record breaking spree with several new achievements since its release. It has touched the highest individual collection in circuits such as Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan,' Nandu Ahuja, senior vice president, distribution, Eros International Media Ltd said in a statement.

    

'We see repeat viewings of the movie with the 3-D version being equally sought after. With the Eid holiday also coming up next week and no other major film release, we are anticipating the film to continue doing huge numbers,' he added.

Speaking on the film's overseas performance, Pranab Kapadia, president, distribution, Eros International, said: 'The film is enjoying a superb run across all major regions including UK, North America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East. Overseas, the film has broken SRK's own previous first weekend record established by 'My Name Is Khan' and occupies the position of biggest Indian first weekend grosser overseas as well.'

               

Eros plans to take the film to non-traditional markets - 'RA.One' is scheduled for theatrical release in the first quarter of 2012 across several territories including South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia , Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Palestine, Brazil, Spain, Italy and Greece .

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, 'RA.One' saw King Khan as G.One along with Arjun Rampal as Ra.One and Kareena Kapoor.

Though the critics didn't give it a thumbs up, the film's visual effects and state of the art production techniques have set a new standard in the Indian film industry.

Hard to tell where seven billionth baby born: UN chief

Nov 01, (CMC) : with countries across the world, including India, staking claim to being home to the seven billionth baby, United Nations Chief Ban Ki Moon said his office would not be able to pin-point who the world's seven billionth inhabitant is and where the baby was born.

"I am not in a position to make a firm clarification on who is the seven billionth baby," Moon said in response to a question at a press conference here to mark the 'day of seven billion.'

 In India, the birth of baby girl Nargis near Lucknow was being marked as the landmark moment in world population. Nargis was born to Ajay and Vinita Yadav, residents of  Dhanaur village in Mall block in Uttar Pradesh's capital.

Celebrations were also being held in the Philippines, where Danica May Camacho was named the seven billionth baby.

"I have read both reports coming from Manila and India (on the birth of the babies). Let us see," Moon said amid laughter.

United Nations Population Fund Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin said the birth of the seven billionth baby should "sensitise" the world about the challenges and the opportunity the landmark moment has to offer.

"We have not anointed any child any where (on being the seven billionth baby)," Osotimehin said adding that it is possible that people in different countries claim and celebrate the birth of the historic baby.

Moon added that the day of 'Seven Billion' is not about one newborn or one generation but about "our entire human family."

Army to confer Lt Col rank upon Bindra, Dhoni

New Delhi, Nov 01 (CMC) : Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Olympic Gold Medallist Abhinav Bindra will don the olive green uniform of the Army on Tuesday along with a combat specialist Deepak Annaji Rao, who is being conferred with the honorary rank of major.

The Defence Ministry had decided to confer the rank of honorary Lt Col on the two sportspersons for their contribution in the field of cricket and shooting respectively whereas Rao is being honoured for imparting special commando training to the armed forces for the last 17 years.

Mumbai-based trainer Rao has also imparted lessons in close quarter battle techniques and commando combat training to Army Chief General V K Singh earlier in his career.

Dhoni led India to World Cup victory earlier this year and was instrumental in taking the team to the No 1 spot in Test rankings for the first time ever.

Bindra had won the only individual Olympic gold medal for India at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Both these sportspersons have joined the ranks of senior cricketers like Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar who have been conferred with honorary ranks in the armed forces.

Kapil Dev is an honorary Lt Col in the Territorial Army, while Tendulkar is an honorary Group Captain in the Indian Air Force. So far, only 17 persons from different walks of life have been conferred with honorary ranks in the Indian Army in the post independence era.

As per the Defence Ministry rules, honorary ranks can be granted to people who have rendered service of high order to the country and any of the armed forces.

Washington, Nov 01 (CMC) The United States today announced to stop financial contribution to UNESCO after the UN body voted to admit Palestine as its full member, which the Obama Administration termed as regrettable and premature.
"Palestinian membership as a state in UNESCO triggers long-standing legislative restrictions which will compel the United States to refrain from making contributions to UNESCO," State Department spokesperson, Victoria Nuland, told reporters at her daily news conference.
"We were to have made a USD 60 million payment to UNESCO in November, and we will not be making that payment," Nuland said. The total American annual contribution to UNESCO is USD 80 billion which is more than one-fifth of its budget.
The State Department's announcement in this regard came soon after the White House termed it as premature.
"So we want to continue to work with UNESCO, including remaining on UNESCO's executive board, and we will continue our efforts to try to win reelection to UNESCO's governing board. But we are not going to be able to continue contributing to the budget.
And, you know, under UNESCO's rules, if this continues for some two years, there could be implications for our membership status," Nuland said.
Under UNESCO rules, a member country tends to lose its voting rights if it does not pays its dues for more than two years.
"It could have implications for our voting rights.
Under UNESCO's constitution, a member state will have no vote in the general conference if it gets more than two years in arrears in its contribution. So our actual arrear age status will begin in January," she said.
Echoing White House, Nuland said today's vote by the member states of UNESCO to admit Palestine as a member is regrettable, premature, and undermines their shared goal of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
"The United States remains steadfast in its support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, but such a state can only be realized through direct negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians," she said.
"The United States also remains strongly committed to robust multilateral engagement across the UN system. However, Palestinian membership as a state in UNESCO triggers long -standing legislative restrictions which will compel the United States to refrain from making contributions to UNESCO," she said.
One of America's main concern is that such a development creates tensions, when they should be concerting their efforts to get the parties back to the table, she said.
"Our concern is that this could exacerbate the environment which we're trying to work through so that the parties will get back to the table," she said.
"We want to continue working with UNESCO because we believes that UNESCO advances US interests, advances US values, a whole list of programs that UNESCO is responsible for that we support, including literacy training for Afghan police and army cadets, tsunami early warning, nurturing and protecting journalists across the Middle East and Africa, conducting large-scale teacher training efforts throughout Africa," Nuland said.
Today's vote at UNESCO to admit the Palestinian Authority as a member, is premature and undermines the international community's shared goal of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East, White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney, told reporters.
"Today's vote distracts us from our shared goal of direct negotiations that result in a secure Israel and an independent Palestine living side by side in peace and security," Carney said in response to a question.
I mean, not unlike the issue of membership as we discussed, the path to peace is through direct negotiations, and we support measures and steps that bring the two sides closer to direct negotiations, which is the only way to resolve the differences between them, said the White House spokesperson. .

Premji slams "complete absence of government decision-making"

Bangalore, Oct 31 (CMC) IT czar Azim Premji today slammed "complete absence of decision making" in Government and warned that growth would suffer if prompt corrective action is not taken.
"I think the biggest concerns are governance issues...", the Chairman of Wipro, the country's third largest software service exporter and listed on New York Stock Exchange, said when asked what he thought was the "biggest concern for the country today".
Apparently referring to scams in media spotlight,he pointed to "governance issues which are hitting headlines, hitting a little less today they were hitting a month back".
                     
"...complete absence of decision-making among leaders in Government..", Premji said, adding, if prompt corrective action is not taken, there is going to be a set-back to growth.
"You must appreciate how serious it is", he said.
A group of prominent personalities, including Premji, Keshub Mahindra and Deepak Parekh, has in a letter to the nation's leaders earlier this month expressed concern over a series of scams leading to 'governance deficit', but said that national challenges like fighting corruption cannot be solved by urban protests and posturing.
In their second 'open letter' addressed to the nation's leaders, they had endorsed Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's statement that economic progress must not be hijacked by internal dissensions.
On the Government's response to this, Premji said: "So far as the open letter is concerned, the reaction of the Prime Minister has been positive to it in terms of taking it on record".
