Olympics: Shooter Vijay Kumar wins silver medal for India

Clean Media Correspondent

London, August 03 (CMC) Army sharp shooter Vijay Kumar today fought a nerve-wracking battle with five other top marksmen to clinch the silver medal in the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the Olympic Games here today.

Kumar beat back the challenge of world champion Alexei Klimov of Russia, Chinese duo of Ding Feng and Zhang Jian and German Christian Reitz in the 40-shot final to finish runner-up in a thrilling finale behind Cuba's Leuris Pupo who shot his way to the gold with a world record equalling score of 34.

The 26-year-old army subedar from Himachal Pradesh found the target 30 times out of 40 attempts in the series comprising eight rounds of five shots each.

This is India's second medal in the ongoing quadrennial extravaganza after fellow marksman Gagan Narang's bronze in the 10m Air Rifle event on July 30. This was also the country's fourth medal in shooting in Olympic history.

The other medal winners are Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (silver in 2004 Athens) , Abhinav Bindra (gold in 2008 Beijing) besides Narang.

Kumar started with a bang, hitting the target all five times and kept himself in the hunt for a medal by consistently finding the target.

After a perfect five out of five at the start, Kumar, a double gold medallist in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, found the target four times in the second and third series, but missed it twice in the fourth.

He came back strongly by finding the target four times in the next three rounds and assured himself of a silver. In the last round after Pupo shot four to clinch the gold, Kumar seemed to relax a bit and missed three targets.

The bronze medal was won by Feng with a tally of 27.

Earlier in the afternoon, ace marksman Vijay Kumar lifted the Indian shooting team's spirit by qualifying for the final of the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the Olympic Games here today.

En route to his total score of 585, Kumar became the second shooter to break the previous Olympic record of 583 during the second stage of qualification.

Placed fourth in the list, Kumar, who had scored 293 in stage 1 of the qualification yesterday, shot a series of 98 97 97 in the second stage to take his total score to 585.

He shot a sequence of 99 96 98 at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

Pre-Games medal favourite Ronjan Sodhi had yesterday failed to qualify for the double trap event.

Russian Alexei Klimov created a new world record by shooting 592.

He scored a total of 592 after Stage 2, breaking the existing world record of 591 and Olympic record of 583, with 294 points in Stage 1 and a staggering 298 out of 300 in Stage 2.

In a disappointment for India, Joydeep Karmakar narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the 50m rifle prone event after setting an Olympic record in the qualifying stage while Vijay Kumar qualified for the final of the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event.
In an event where 10m air rifle bronze-medallist Gagan Narang failed to qualify for the finals, Karmakar put his best foot forward to finish fourth with a tally of 699.1, which was 1.9 adrift of bronze medal winner's score of 701.0.

However, in the Rapid Fire event, en route to his total score of 585, fourth-placed Kumar became the second shooter to break the previous Olympic record of 583 during the second stage of qualification.

In Karmakar's event, after scoring 595 out of 600 before qualifying for the finals through a shoot-off with eight others, who were all tied in fourth place, the 32-year-old Kolkata lad shot consistently well in the finals, but still finished outside the medal bracket.

The one point difference that Karmakar conceded to the eventual bronze medallist, Rajmond Debevec of Slovenia, proved to be decisive in the battle for the third place.

Karmakar shot sequence of 10.1, 10.6, 10.7, 10.5, 10.7, 10.2, 10.0, 10.2, 10.7, 10.4 for a total of 104.1, while Debevec fired a 105.0, a difference of less than one.

The gold medal went to Sergei Martynov of Belarus, who created a new world record of 705.5 and the silver was picked by Belgian Lionel Cox (701.2).

Earlier today, Gagan Narang failed to replicate the form that fetched him the 10m air rifle bronze as he crashed out of the 50m rifle prone event in the qualifying stage.

Narang, who just four days ago became the India's first medal winner at the London Games, could fire only 593 out of 600 to finish a shocking 18th in a field of 50 competitors and lost a great chance of another podium finish.

Karmakar did not have an ideal start as he managed to fire 99 and 98 in the first two rounds. He, however, shot a 100 in the third followed by another 98 in the fourth series at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

But two 100s in the last two rounds helped him finish with 595 total points and at tied fourth with eight other shooters.

At the shoot-off, he scored 51.6 to finish at the seventh spot and thereby earned a berth in the eight-man final.

The leader of the qualifying stage, Martynov scored 600 out of 600 to equal both World as well as Olympics record.

Narang started with a 98 in the first series but came back strongly by getting two perfect 10s for consecutive 100s in the second and third rounds and looked all set to make the cut.

However, he misfired and logged a poor 98 and 97 in the next two rounds, which dashed his chances of making the medal round.

In spite of hitting a 100 in the sixth and in his last round, Narang could finish only behind 17 other shooters in the qualifiers.

Later in the day, placed fourth in the list, Kumar, who had scored 293 in stage 1 of the qualification yesterday, shot a series of 98, 97, 97 in the second stage to take his total score to 585.

He shot a sequence of 99, 96, 98.

Team Anna ready for political role, to end fast

Team Anna ready for political role, to end fast
 Clean Media Correspondent

New Delhi, August 02 (CMC) It was seen coming, finally it has happened. Anna Hazare and his team, who have been fighting for a strong Lokpal, on Thursday announced that they are ready to give a political alternative to the people of the country.

Anna, who along with three others is on fast, announced that he will not join politics but will support a political alternative from outside.

“If a political party needs to be formed to bring change in the country, then so be it,” he said.

"It is another two years to go to polls in 2014. We have to go to people throughout the country in the next one-and- half years," Anna added.

"Why waste time on fasts? Tomorrow at 5 pm, all fast will end," Hazare told supporters at Jantar Mantar at the end of an address in which he enunciated the civil society's approach to providing a political alternative to the current system.

Seeking people’s view on the issue, Anna said that there is nothing wrong in forming a political party as it seems to be the only option left to ensure that right people get elected to Parliament.

Minutes after Anna’s declaration, noted RTI activist and Anna Hazare’s close associate Arvind Kejriwal said, “Team Anna is ready to give a political alternative if the nation wants.”

Kerjriwal said, “Team Anna wants a change in the system, it does not want a change in government.”
Making an appeal to the nation, Kejriwal said, “People are fed up with rampant corruption and they want it to end and if the people of India want us to play a big role in politics we want their valuable suggestion in this regard. We want them to tell us the basis on which candidates for elections be selected…what should be the criterion for their selection.”

Kejriwal also cautioned that the political option will work only if honest people go to Parliament.

“What will happen if corrupt people enter Parliament? What if we fail to choose correct candidates? All your efforts will be wasted if we commit the same mistakes which the main political parties have made in all these years,” he said.

Referring to an opinion poll being conducted by Zee News in which people are asked whether they want Team Anna to join politics, Kejriwal said, “I am happy to announce that out of 75,000 people who responded to the opinion poll on Zee News, nearly 94% favoured Team Anna joining politics.”

Later, Team Anna announced that Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai would end their fast at 5 pm tomorrow.

The fast is set to end but the stage appears set for a bigger battle.

Suddenly, Anna says fasting a ‘waste of time’

Suddenly, Anna says fasting a ‘waste of time’
Clean Media Correspondent

New Delhi, August 02 (CMC) With the government refusing to play ball, Team Anna announced today that they would end their “indefinite” fast at 5 pm tomorrow — the tenth day of the protest — even as they indicated that they wanted to play a more active political role.

Addressing his supporters today, Anna Hazare said: “It is another two years to go to polls in 2014. We have to go to the people throughout the country in the next one-and-a-half years. Why waste time on fasts?”

Unlike their earlier protests, the latest fast was marked by low turnout.

“It is time for us to think of an alternative. We want a political alternative. But I will not launch or join a party. People should decide who should be given tickets and how to achieve that alternative system,” said Hazare.

Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan sought responses from the people in the next 48 hours on a “political alternative”. Sources in the core committee said while Hazare is opposed to the idea of launching a party, some like Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal have been pushing for it since February.

A tweet on the team’s official Janlokpal handle asked people to reply “yes” or “no” on whether they should “provide a political alternative to the country”.

However, differences within the members on the issue were apparent. Within hours of Bhushan’s statement seeking feedback from the people, an e-mail from Chandramohan, representative of the Chennai India Against Corruption (IAC) chapter in the core committee, was circulated among a section of IAC members questioning the Delhi-centric decision-making process. “If going political is what we want, then why even go through this. I certainly don’t want Annaji or others to suffer in this fast but this is a protest without any clear strategy. It feels like we were just going through the motions and just given up,” said the e-mail.
Chandramohan later denied having written the e-mail, but admited that it was sent from his e-mail ID. “I do not understand what is happening,” he said.

Another core committee member, Santosh Hegde, raised questions of the contours of the “political alternative”. “If any decision was taken in the core committee on this, I am not aware of it,” he said.

Kumar Vishwas said the question of whether IAC should launch a political party is “an open debate”.

Darshak Hathi, another core committee member, said the political alternative in question is unlikely to be a political party as Hazare is opposed to it. “He wants us to support good people as candidates. But if some others want a political party, let us see how things shape up,” he said.

Earlier in the day, a group of eminent personalities, including jurist V R Krishna Iyer, former Army Chief Gen V K Singh, former CEC J M Lyngdoh and Kuldeep Nayar, appealed to Team Anna to end the fast.

“We call upon Anna Hazare and all his associates who have been on an indefinite fast to give up on their expectations from this establishment. Instead we call upon them to focus their energies on creating an alternative political force that is democratic, accountable, ethical and non-violent and capable of leading an electoral revolution to democratise and decentralise power and make the power structures of the country more accountable to the people,” they said in their letter which was read out at the protest site.

London, August 02 (CMC) Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal scripted history on Thursday as she became the first Indian to reach the semifinals of the Olympics badminton event at the Wembley Arena in London. The World No.5 defeated Danish Tine Baun 21-15, 22-20 in 39 minutes to reach the last four of women's singles at the Wembley Arena. In the process Saina also improved her head-to-head record againt Baun to 4-3.
The Indian took off in excellent form with her cross-court and traditional sliced smashes. The fourth seed forced Baun to make several errors in the first game with precise volleys on which the Dane erred.
Saina, a Pullela Gopichand protege, gained a solid advantage (16-9) aided by some exquisite deft touches at the net.
The 33-year-old Dane, an old foe of Saina, tried fighting back but the Hyderabadi proved too good and did not allow Baun to keep her serve.
Saina, 22, with her brilliant on-court movement and deep lunges for the shuttle earned a 20-13 advantage and won the game on her fourth game point.
Baun, determined to fight back, put up a much better show in the second game which almost went in her favour.
The Chinese-born girl saved a few game points, mainly because of the error of judgement by Saina and a couple of loose shots but soon the Indian pocketed the game with a beautiful net play.
In the second game, Saina brought out her variations and involved Jie in rallies to lead 11-7 at the break.
Jie fought back to narrow the gap to 14-12 but that didn't affect the Indian as she moved ahead to 19-15 with a drop and then executed a cross court smash to earn the match point.

Pune blasts 'a planned act'; cops register FIR
Clean Media Correspondent

Pune, August 02 (CMC) A day after low-intensity explosions rocked Pune on Wednesday night, the police on Thursday registered an FIR in the case against unknown.

The Deccan Gymkhana police station has reportedly filed the FIR under Sections 120-B and 427 of the Indian Penal Code, and under Explosive Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The Pune crime branch will investigate the attacks.

Also, the man who got injured in one of the blasts, who was thought to be the main suspect, has been given a clean chit by the police, reports claimed.

A local tailor, Dayanand Patil, was injured in the blast at Balgandharva Theatre. He is a local and had accidentally picked up the bag out of curiosity, opened it and got injured. He was discharged from Sasoon Hospital today morning but was taken into custody by the Pune Crime Branch for further questioning. Patil’s wife has also been called to the police station in connection with the probe.

In the meantime, the Centre today described the attacks in the Maharashtra’s cultural capital as a planned and coordinated act.

Union Home Secretary RK Singh said forensic experts were examining the two unexploded IEDs and nature of the four blasts.

"Since the blasts have taken place within an area of 500 metres and within a span of 45 minutes, it appears to be a coordinated act. I am sure there was a plan behind it," he told reporters here.

Singh said teams of National Investigation Agency, National Security Guards and Central Forensic Science Laboratory reached Pune early this morning and were examining the explosives.

"They have examined two IEDs which had not exploded. There are three detonators in each and other peculiarity. Investigation is on. We are making progress," he said.

Newly-appointed Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, meanwhile, said that a National Investigation Agency team is in Pune to investigate Pune blasts.

Shinde, who has a huge task at hand as the blast occurred on the day he took over as India’s home minister, said that the officials and investigators have taken Pune blasts very seriously.

He, however, added that the blasts were not a terror attack.

Team Anna to join politics, to end fast on Friday 5 pm
Clean Media Correspondent

New Delhi, August 02 (CMC) 4.06 pm: Anna Hazare said that a political alternative to the government will be found. "We will travel across the country for the next two years," he said.
4.03 pm: Team Anna will call off their fast at 5 pm on Friday.
3.59 pm: Reacting to Anna Hazare's speech, Congress leader Ambika Soni said that it's good that Team Anna's political intentions are out in open. "We were saying this from first day that Team Anna inspired by politics. It's good that their intentions are out in the open. It's best they come out and be part of the same system they abuse always. If they call off their fast, it's a good thing. Don't hold government to ransom. They have made their point and accusing the government of not bringing Lokpal is not true. It's passed in Lok Sabha and its now with Select Committee," she said.
3.45 pm: Arvind Kejriwal addresses crowd at Jantar Mantar:
- This government is deaf and mute. They do not want to pass the Lokpal Bill. All parties are corrupt.
- Our movement is for decentralisation of power, power in the hands of the common man, power to people
- Our movement is for the change of system and not for change of government
- 90 per cent of the people want us to provide a political alternative
- Former General VK Singh, Justice Ayer have requested to end fast
- Several personalities have requested to Anna to end the fast
Anna Hazare addresses crowd at Jantar Mantar:
- Let Gram Sabhas decide whether they want to support clean candidate and the new party
- I will not enter politics. Choosing the right candidate is important. Candidates will be scanned. Need to have the spirit of service, must be patriotic, and non corrupt.
- Blueprint of political alternative or new party: Decentralisation of power, Secularism
- Today people need political alternative
- Things that have not changed in 65 year will change in next 3 year
- We have to send right people in the Parliament who don't change once they are elected.
- We will have to see from where the funds will come from, in case we plan to give a political alternative
- We need decentralisation of power for a political alternative
- The question is - will we be able to give the country the right and correct leadership?
- You should give options
- I also feel that the government is not going to bring Lokpal Bill
- Government does not want to redress Right to Reject, farmers issues, labour issues. We have to give options
- I agree that we have to give option. Parliament needs to have people with integrity then only the political option will work. How are we going to choose people with integrity?
2.50 pm: Former BJP leader KN Govindacharya on Thursday appealed to Team Anna to climb down from their position for a peaceful solution to the present impasse and asked the government to hold talks with them. Govindacharya said he was extremely worried about the health of Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal and that he fully supports their cause. "We strongly condemn the strong-headed attitude of the government that is failing to take initiative to break the logjam," he said in a letter to Hazare and Kejriwal.
2.30 pm: The official twitter handle of India Against Corruption (IAC) as well as its official website on Thursday put a poser to the public asking "should Annaji provide a political alternative to the country? Reply YES or NO to this tweet?" It also tweeted a link which goes to an Internet page which put up two questions -- Do you have any hope from the existing political parties and Should Annaji provide a political alternative to the country?
2.15 pm: Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan asks if people agree with the proposal of eminent citizens to end fast and work toward political alternatives. He has also invited response from people across the country. He said next two days would be crucial.
2.02 pm: An Anna Hazare supporter on Thursday confronted Minister of State in the PMO V Narayanasamy when the minister was interacting with the media outside North Block. A man claiming to be Anna supporter started asking him 'kab bolega tu Lokpal per..kab? (When will you speak on Lokpal?)". Security moved him aside. He later identified himself as an Anna supporter who wanted an answer from the minister on Lokpal.
1.45 pm: Eminent citizens like VR Krishna Iyer, former Army chief General VK Singh, former election commissioner JM Lyndogh, Santosh Hegde, Kuldip Nayar and actor Anupam Kher among others have appealed to Team Anna to end their fast. Retired Naval Chief Tahilyani read out a letter by the eminent citizens at Jantar Mantar.
1.30 pm: Left leader Sitaram Yechury on Thursday said that the government should come forward for talks with Team Anna. "Let them enter politics. Let there be an exchange of ideas. We will see the nature of their political platform. They had painted the entire political class with the same brush which was unfortunate. Dialogue is essence of democracy. The Lokpal bill is with the Standing Committee of Parliament. The government should be open to dialogue," he said.
1.05 pm: The sarpanch of Anna Hazare's native village Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district on Thursday left for Delhi along with some other villagers to meet the social activist. "Sarpanch Jaisinh Mapari and a few villagers left Ralegan this morning to meet Anna," Hazare's aide Datta Awari said. In the evening, the villagers would organise a morcha at Padmavati temple in Ralegan in support of Hazare, he said.
12.35 pm: Actor Anupam Kher said that Team Anna's leadership is necessary for taking the anti-corruption movement forward. "It is our duty to raise voice against corruption. It is necessary that this voice reaches the masses. I appeal to all fasting activists, including Arvind, to call off their fast," he told reporters at Jantar Mantar.
"I have not come here to show my face at Jantar Mantar. I am here as a common man participate in the andolan. It's hameful that people are fasting and there is no initiative from the government. This andolan will continue as corruption cannot be rooted out from the society overnight," he said.
12.25 pm: Bollywood actor Anupam Kher on Thursday appealed to Team Anna to end the fast. Actress Archana Puran Singh too joined Team Anna on the stage.
12.05 pm: None of the fasting activists took to the dais till 11:30 am though a crowd of around 500 gathered at the protest venue at Jantar Mantar here. Anna Hazare came to the stage along with Bollywood actor Anupam Kher a little later.
11.50 am: Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai have refused hospitalisation despite their health condition worsening and a warning from police that organisers will be "sqaurely responsible" if anything happens to the fasting activists.
11.25 am: Doctors who are attending Team Anna members on Thursday said that Arvind Kejriwal has refused to take liquid diet. "We took Arvind Kejriwaloff medicines and controlled food intake. He was on vegetable juices and fruits for days before the fast. We are confident that the three can carry it for as long as they don't become nervous. If they become nervous, we have to break the fast," doctor Ran Singh Arya said.
11.10 am: The condition of Arvind Kejrwial, Gopal Rai and Manish Sisodia is stable at the moment.
10.40 am: Team Anna member Kiran Bedi has reiterated that she will not ask members to break their fast, and said let the Delhi Police go about doing its job. "I have already said they are here to sacrifice. Corruption in high places is policy and at low places is theft."
Fearing forcible hospitalization of three fasting activists, including Arvind Kejriwal, scores of Team Anna supporters kept vigil throughout the night at the Jantar Mantar protest venue. Corruption in high places is policy and at low places is theft," she said.
The intervening night of August one and two saw around 300 supporters camping at the protest venue, where the fast of Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai entered the ninth day on Thursday, and keeping a watch on every step of policemen.
At 1 am, even the routine change of duty of police personnel was initially perceived by protesters as a sign of mobilisation to forcibly take Kejriwal and two others two hospital.
A volunteer immediately alerted others and as supporters started gathering, a senior police official informed them that it was change of duty of personnel and they were there not to take anybody to hospital.
The night also saw groups of protesters leaving for residences of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to stage protest in a bid to step up pressure on the government to initiate talks.
Delhi Police had on Wednesday advised Team Anna to hospitalise the trio and warned that they would be "squarely responsible" if anything happened to the fasting activists.
Team Anna had rejected the government hospital report advising hospitalisation, saying it was "fake" and their doctors announced that they were fit to continue the fast as their vital parameters were stable.
Police personnel were deployed in large numbers at the site following bomb blasts in Pune and bomb disposal squads checked the protest venue in the night and early this morning.

Olympics: Big day for Indian badminton, Parupalli Kashyap in quarters

Clean Media Correspondent

London, August 01 (CMC) Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap today beat giant-killer Niluka Karunaratne of Sri Lanka 21-15 14-21 21-9 in the last 16 stage to reach the men's singles quarterfinal of the London Olympics.

Kashyap, ranked 21st in the world, had stunned world number 11 Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam in pre-quarterfinals on Monday 21-9 21-14 in the second and final Group D match of the men's singles event to reach the knockout stage. He had beaten Belgium's Tan Yuhan in an earlier game.

Karunaratne, too, had produced a gritty performance to surprise eighth seed Kenichi Tago of Japan 21-18 21-16 to top group C.

Kashyap is the only Indian male shuttler to reach the quarterfinals stage at the Olympics, surpassing his mentor and coach Pullela Gopichand.

The Sri Lankan flagbearer at the opening ceremony, Karunaratne is ranked 48th in the world and has been an unheralded player even though he had won four tournaments at international challenge level.

India's ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, who has also advanced to the pre-quarterfinals after her comfortable victory over Belgium's Lianne Tan on Monday, is likely to clash with 14th seeded Jie Yao of The Netherlands in the last 16.

12.35 pm: Anna Hazare on Wednesday vowed that the fast at Jantar Mnatar will continue, saying that the UPA government is scared of their tactics. "The government is unnecessarily blaming us. Fast will continue. Arvind Kejriwal is doing this for nation. Why can't government see that? Fasting for a cause is a part of Indian history and not a crime. The government is scared of our tactic. If they use force we will still continue our fast.
Kejriwal, whose condition is said to be serious, said that the government was trying to take him to the hospital. "The government should not touch me. They are saying that under IPC I am attempting suicide but they are wrong. This government is worse than Britishers," he said.

10.45 am: Doctors on Wednesday advised Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal to get admitted to a hospital but Kejriwal refused. Kejriwal is diabetic and is feeling weak.
10.30 am: Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal's health worsened after his indefinite fast entered eight day on Wednesday.
As Anna Hazare’s indefinite fast entered the fourth day on Wednesday, 400 of his supporters including Team member Arvind Kejriwal, who've been fasting for a week have warned against being forcibly hospitalised even as their health deteriorates.
Doctors on Wednesday said that the condition of Kejriwal was serious but not alarming. According to the morning health update, Kejriwal is weak.
Earlier, Anna Hazare on Tuesday ruled out any talks even with the Prime Minister and vowed to continue the stir till their demands are met while the government showed no signs of initiating negotiations with his team.
The tough postering of Hazare, who threatened to return the Padma Bhushan bestowed on him, came on a day when his close aides Arvind Kejriwal and Gopal Rai, whose fast entered the seventh day, were advised hospitalisation by doctors but they rejected it saying they were "not cowards who will give up because of health concerns".
The day also saw Team Anna targeting UPA government saying their mission is to ensure that "new and apt people" come to power in the 2014. It also attacked BJP alleging that it supported them earlier with a political motive.
During his address to protesters at Jantar Mantar this evening, Hazare said "the government says they will not send any representative to talk to us. We don't want anyone to come and talk to us. We don't need ministers to come and talk to us. The agitation will continue till our demands are met.
"I am not even ready to talk to the Prime Minister.... I can return Padma Bhushan right now. The people have given me such a big award," Hazare, who was awarded Padma Shri in 1990 and Padma Bhushan two years later, said.
He said he had earlier returned Padma Shri on the issue of corruption. "These awards were given to me not that I asked these. I am doing it for my country and for my people," he said.
Earlier in on Tuesday, Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan targeted government for not initiating a dialogue with Team Anna alleging that they want people like Hazare to die so that they can continue to loot the country. "Government yesterday said they were not ready to talk to us. This is their attitude. They have utmost disrespect for people. They want people like Anna, Arvind, Manish and others to die so that they can continue their loot," he said.
Political statements from the dais came from Kiran Bedi and Kumar Vishwas, with one taking on UPA in a veiled manner and the other attacking BJP.
"This mission will not stop till 2014 elections, till the time new and apt people come in power. We have to go till the end which is 2014 where people with Anna's blessings will come to power. Till then, our responsibility is to spread these words," Bedi said.
Referring to BJP chief Nitin Gadkari's reported comments that Team Anna should not target system in general, Vishwas said, "They supported our movement earlier but not now. I just want to say you were there in support because you had your own political motives. His party was with us because they thought it will help them win elections in five states."
Regretting the attack on mediapersons, Hazare told his supporters this morning that he "felt sad" after hearing about the attack on media accusing them of not giving proper coverage to the indefinite fast on corruption issues.
"If you indulge in violence, remember that the government can crush us in two days. They have the strength and laws to do that. In future, if these things happen again, at that moment I will call off this agitation. I don't approve of this. Let media do their work. Don't bother about what they do," he said.

Mayawati DA case: CBI decides not to file review petition

Mayawati DA case: CBI decides not to file review petition
Clean Media Correspondent

New Delhi, August 01 (CMC) The CBI has decided not to challenge the Supreme Court order, through a review petition, quashing the alleged disproportionate assets case against former UP Chief Minister Mayawati.
The agency has decided not to file any review petition after receiving legal opinion from its Directorate of Prosecution which said the option would not be feasible, CBI sources said.
The Supreme Court on July 6 had quashed a nine-year-long disproportionate assets case against her and pulled up the CBI for exceeding its jurisdiction by lodging an FIR against her without any direction from it.
The apex court had said the DA case against Mayawati was "unwarranted" and the agency proceeded against her without properly understanding its orders which were confined to the Taj Corridor case relating to the release of Rs17 crore by UP government allegedly without sanction.
A bench of justices P Sathasivam and Deepak Mishra said that various Supreme Court orders pertained to initiating a probe against state government officials in the scam and there was no such direction to lodge another FIR "exclusively" against Mayawati for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income.
"We hold that in the absence of any specific direction from this Court in the order dated September 18, 2003 or any subsequent orders, the CBI has exceeded its jurisdiction in lodging the FIR," the bench had said, adding, "the impugned FIR is without jurisdiction and any investigation pursuant thereto is illegal and liable to be quashed, accordingly quashed."

Mulayam Singh Yadav pulls up son Akhilesh Yadav's government

Clean Media Correspondent

Lucknow, 01 Aug (CMC): In September, Akhilesh Yadav will complete six  months as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. His father, Mulayam, who is also the chief of the Samajwadi Party, has said the government isn't meeting its targets. Akhilesh said today that he accepts the criticism. "He is our leader...we will try to follow his advice, do what he suggests," he said today.

At a meeting held on Tuesday at the chief minister's residence, Mulayam pulled up ministers and state legislators, warning them that the government needs to work harder to deliver the promises made by the party in the campaign for the elections, led by 39-year-old Akhilesh.

Mulayam also pointed out that the general elections are less than two years away, so the state government must move quickly to deliver better services to the state. He allegedly picked his son to head the government in UP partly so that he could spend time in Delhi, negotiating a bigger role at the centre for his party.
He warned ministers that recent outbursts against each other were damaging the government's image.

Eight women charged for "throwing" badminton charges

Eight women charged for "throwing" badminton charges

Clean Media Correspondent

London 01 Aug (CMC) The World Badminton Federation charged eight female players with misconduct on Wednesday after four Olympic doubles teams had attempted to "throw" matches to secure a more favourable draw later in the tournament.
"The pairs have been charged ... with 'not using one's best efforts to win a match' and 'conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport'," the federation said in a statement.
The players involved in Tuesday's matches were China's world champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, Indonesia's Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari and two South Korean pairs - Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na, and Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min Jung.
Spectators at the Wembley Arena shouted abuse and jeered at the players amid farcical scenes as the teams deliberately sprayed shots and duffed serves into the net to concede points.
"The Chinese sports delegation take the incident in the women's badminton doubles very seriously," state news agency Xinhua quoted an unnamed spokesman as saying.
"After the delegation's leadership learnt about it, they immediately tasked the relevant people with an investigation. The Chinese Olympic Committee has always advocated the fostering of the Olympic spirit on the playing field as well as the spirit of fair and just competition.
China "opposes any behaviour or acts which contravene this spirit or sports morality for any reason or in any form", the report added.
South Korea head coach Sung Han-kook said his two pairings attempted to throw their matches against China's world champion duo and the Indonesians but added it was in retaliation against the Chinese team who instigated the situation.
He said the Chinese deliberately tried to throw the first of the tainted matches to ensure their leading duo of Yu and Wang would not meet the country's number two pair until the gold medal decider.
COMPLICATED THING
"The Chinese started this. They did it first," Sung told reporters through an interpreter. "It's a complicated thing with the draws. They didn't want to meet each other in the semi-final.
"So we did the same. We didn't want to play the South Korean team again (in the knockout stages)."
Yu and Wang ended up losing to Jung and Kim 21-14 21-11 after a referee warned both teams they could be disqualified. The first game's longest rally contained four shots.
Players were jeered as they left the arena, the result putting Yu and Wang on the other side of the draw to their compatriots.
China's long-serving head coach Li Yongbo denied anything was amiss when cornered by Reuters at the venue.
"This is nothing. It was just a game," said Li with a chuckle as he walked off, declining to comment further.
Yu, who won doubles gold at the 2008 Beijing Games with partner Du Jing, said she and Wang eased off to conserve their strength for the later stages.
"Actually these opponents were really strong. This is the first time we've played them and tomorrow it's the knockout rounds so we've already qualified and we wanted to have more energy for the knockout rounds," she told Reuters.
FARCICAL SCENARIO
Boos again rang out later in the evening session as the match between South Koreans Ha and Kim and Indonesians Polii and Jauhari repeated the same farcical scenario.
With spectators yelling "get off", another referee emerged and waved a black card, indicating both teams were disqualified, prompting a roar of approval from the stands.
However, the referee rescinded the decision moments later after coaches from both teams implored the contest be allowed to continue and Ha and Kim ended up as reluctant winners in three sets.
Players and coaches of other teams expressed disdain and laid the blame on the Chinese camp.
"It's because of those Chinese," a Taiwan team coach who declined to be identified told Reuters.
Bulgarian singles player Alesia Zaitsave said China regularly manipulated results to avoid playing each other.
"They did so many times last year, they did not play between each other like 20 matches. They do what they want," he said.
Men's singles player Marc Zwiebler of Germany said South Koreans had manipulated matches in the 2008 Thomas Cup.
"Against England they wanted to get second in their group so all the doubles players played singles and the singles players played doubles and they were just laughing on the court and let England win," Zwiebler said.
"England finished top of the group and had to play a stronger team."
China's head coach Li told one of his women's singles players to throw her semi-final at the 2004 Athens Games to allow team mate Zhang Ning to be fresher for the final against Dutchwoman Mia Audina.
Zhang duly won the gold.
"If it was the case they wanted to purposely lose, then it's a big shame ... it's absolutely stupid and shameful sport," Zwieber added.
"I can understand the motives but that they have the guts to actually stand in a crowded hall and put such shame in the game, it's such a bad image for badminton."
Organisers released the draw later on Tuesday, with all of the teams involved listed in the quarter-finals.
The incidents generated heated debate in China on Wednesday with many taking to the popular microblogging site Sina Weibo to slam their players.
"They should be thrown out of the Olympics," wrote one user.
However, some said they should be applauded for their cunning in trying to ensure golds for China.
"The competition is not just about athletic prowess. It's also about whether you can use your wits," wrote another user.

Tamil Nadu Express blaze mystery deepens

Tamil Nadu Express blaze mystery deepens
Clean Media Correspondent

NELLORE, 01 Aug (CMC): A day after the blaze that killed 28 passengers in the ill-fated S-11 coach of Tamil Nadu Express near here, mystery over the cause of fire deepened with the investigators grappling to gather evidence from the gutted bogie. As the police and forensic expert teams on Tuesday wondered how the blaze turned to cinder the entire coach within a span of 20-30 minutes, a close look at the death pattern of the passengers presented a puzzle.
While passenger in berth number 1 Chitra of Delhi escaped unhurt, D Shalini of Kapra, Hyderabad, occupying berth no 2 lost her life. Passengers who occupied berths from 3 to 7 were safe, while occupant of berth no 8 Anil of Delhi was untraceable even 48 hours after the tragedy. Again, passengers of berth nos 9-13 escaped from the fire, P Sunitha of Vijayawada on berth no 14 is missing and presumed dead.
Some of the survivors told TOI that the fire did not break out from one end, as passengers from both the corners and middle of the coach were also burnt alive. "In addition to the jammed doors, the fire seemed to have spread to all corners almost simultaneously leaving little or no scope for the passengers to escape," an investigating official told TOI.
A case in point: Initial reports said the fire had broken out from the toilet located near berth no 72. While the passengers who occupied berths 65 to 71 were safe, Uttam Kumar of Vijayawada (berth no 72) died. "Majority of the victims were those who occupied the middle portion of the coach," a forensic expert said.
Passengers of berth nos 48-58 were all choked to death while passengers of berth nos 8, 17, 29, 34, 38, 42, 45 and 46 had perished in the fire. More than 20 bodies were found at the exit. "Rescue team members could not muster courage to bring out the bodies as the bogie had turned into an ash bin," a police official pointed out.
Experts believe that there must have been some inflammable substance (either gas or liquid) that caught fire and spread within no time. While the train travelled for just five minutes from the Nellore station, it was brought to a halt in next the 10 minutes after the gateman, Ch Srinivasulu, noticed the fire in S-11 coach. "The passengers did not have enough time to get down from the coach as thick smoke and flames engulfed it by then. In the next 10-15 minutes, the entire coach was gutted," the official said.
With station master Shajahan claiming that no fire or smoke was found when the train was passing the station around 4.15 am, experts reason that the fire might have started only after the train had left the station. The train was brought to a halt within 5-6 km from the station near Vijayamahal level crossing which was just five minutes away and which is where the gateman first noticed the fire.

Iran, al-Qaida, Taliban told to pay $6 billion for 9/11
Clean Media Correspondent

New York, August 01 (CMC) Al-Qaida, the Taliban and Iran should pay $6 billion to relatives of Sept. 11 victims for aiding in the 2001 terrorist attacks, a federal magistrate judge recommended on Monday in a largely symbolic decision.
Even though it will be nearly impossible to collect damages, plaintiff Ellen Saracini, whose husband, Victor, was the captain of one of the planes that struck the World Trade Center, told the Daily News that she is happy about Manhattan Federal Magistrate Judge Frank Maas' recommendation.
"It's hard being happy, but I am happy about it," said Saracini. "But it opens up old wounds. We were never in it for a lawsuit. I wanted to know what happened to my husband."

Last year, Judge George Daniels signed a default judgment on the lawsuit brought by relatives of 47 victims. He found al-Qaida, the Taliban and Iran liable and asked the magistrate to determine damages. Maas' ruling on Monday is a recommendation to Daniels, who can accept it or amend it.
Maas calculated punitive and compensatory damages for each of the plaintiffs and their lost family members.
Daniels ruled last year that the plaintiffs had established that the 2001 attacks were caused by the support the defendants provided to al-Qaida. The findings said Iran continues to provide material support and resources to al-Qaida by providing a safe haven for al-Qaida leadership and rank-and-file members.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly denied any Iranian connection in the Sept. 11 attacks or with al-Qaida.
Al-Qaida and Iran are natural enemies but have had a relationship of convenience based on their shared adversary, the United States. Iran allowed several of the 9/11 hijackers to pass through the country, but the 9/11 Commission found no evidence that Iran was aware of the planned attack.

Sushil Kumar Shinde's elevation to MHA a reward for loyalty to the Gandhi family?
Clean Media Correspondent

New Delhi, August 01 (CMC) Even as two third of India was plunged into darkness after three of its power grids failed on Tuesday afternoon, the government notified the elevation of Sushil Kumar Shinde from Power Ministry to Home Ministry.
The move shocked many with the Opposition calling it a "reward for his loyalty to the Gandhi family".
BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said that instead of being hauled up for what was the country's worst power failure, the minister who was in charge of the department was being rewarded with promotion.
In fact, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is said to have written a letter to Shinde last year saying that he was not doing enough to improve the country's power situation.
Shinde is also seen by many as a weak political candidate. In fact, in 2004, despite winning electoral battles, he was replaced by Vilasrao Deshmukh as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra as many within the Congress considered him politically ineffective.
The power failure on Tuesday was India's worst ever. Three electricity grids connecting more than 20 states and the national capital collapsed on Tuesday, triggering a major power crisis across the country. The power crisis was the second in two days.
The blackout in 20 states across north, eastern and north-eastern India affected more than 60 crore people and severely impacted train services in six railway zones, bringing over 400 trains to halt.

Power fully restored to three electricity grids: official
Clean Media Correspondent

New Delhi, August 01 (CMC) Power has been fully restored to three electricity grids which had failed in India, causing a blackout affecting more than 600 million people, a senior official said on Wednesday. "Power has been restored fully across the northern, eastern and north-eastern grids,"
Corporation chief SK Soonee said, referring to the systems which collapsed on Tuesday in an unprecedented outage.

Soonee said that power had been re-established overnight by engineers from PSOC, the state-owned company which manages the country's electricity generation system.
The three power grids collapsed from around 1:00 pm local time on Tuesday, and electricity was gradually restored during the course of the day.
The crisis affected 20 out of the nation's 29 states, an area home to more than 600 million people including the huge cities of New Delhi and Kolkata.
The government has announced an investigation into the cause of the crisis,  which is a blow to the image of the world's second most populous nation as it strives for greater global economic and political clout.
States overdrawing electricity from the regional grids is thought to have caused the collapse. India has a large power deficit caused by surging demand which has outstripped the creaking national system's ability to supply.
An earlier blackout on Monday on the northern grid, described as the worst in a decade, hit in the middle of the night and left nine states without power for six hours.
