Judges' rush for post-retirement jobs not favourable: BJP

New Delhi, Sept 30 (CMC) BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Sunday called for a two-year cooling off period before judges are considered for post-retirement posts, suggesting that the present system adversely affected the independence of the judiciary vis-à-vis the government.
He was speaking at a programme organised by the party's legal cell.
"He took potshots on the growing tendency among several judges (on the verge of retirement), who try to speak and act friendly to the government with an eye on cushy government assignments just after retirement,"a release by the BJP legal cell quoted Gadkari as saying.
Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley also articulated a similar position: "This clamour for post-retirement jobs is adversely affecting the impartiality of the judiciary of the country and time has come that it should come to an end.”
Jaitley called for a national judicial commission with representatives from the judiciary, government and society to look after matters related to appointment of judges and complaints against judges.
The BJP leader, however, added that he was not against increasing the tenure of judges.
Criticising Jaitley's statements on judiciary, Congress on Sunday said he should have the conviction of saying things clearly instead of "casting aspersions by insinuation".
"Rather then cast aspersions by insinuation, he should have the conviction of saying certain things squarely if he knows them to be true," Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said in New Delhi.
