Gujrat CM Modi has his ways in BJP, Sanjay Joshi resigns
Clean Media Correspondent
New Delhi, June 08 (CMC) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has gained complete grip over the BJP post-Mumbai National Executive and this was evident on Friday when, in a puzzling move, his arch-rival Sanjay Joshi quit the party.
The BJP maintained a stoic silence on why Mr. Joshi, who was eased out as a member of the National Executive hours before the Mumbai conclave on May 25 at the behest of Mr. Modi, has decided to end his association with the party.
Off the record, party leaders, who did not wish to be named, said BJP president Nitin Gadkari was left with no option but to shunt out Mr. Joshi after the Gujarat Chief Minister made it a ‘prestige issue' with anti-Modi posters surfacing in Ahmedabad and New Delhi in the last few days.
It is not clear whether the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has made a determination that Mr. Modi is the best bet for the party in the 2014 elections, considering the fact that Mr. Joshi is a hard-core RSS member.
Mr. Joshi is expected to now focus entirely on RSS agenda.
There was no formal announcement on the resignation of Mr. Joshi and the news was leaked to sections of the media early in the morning. Faced with a volley of questions at a news conference here, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar read out a sentence from a prepared note and declined to entertain any questions. The press conference was called to critique the economic management of the UPA.
“Sanjay Joshi has requested Nitin Gadkari to relieve him from the party and his request has been accepted by the party president,” Mr. Javadekar said. Asked what prompted this sudden decision, the spokesperson only reiterated the statement.
