Bal Thackeray in ICU; nephew Raj visits him

Clean Media Correspondent

Mumbai, July 25 (CMC) Raj Thackeray today visited his uncle, Bal Thackeray at Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital, where the latter was admitted yesterday for breathlessness.

86-year-old Bal Thackeray, who heads the Shiv Sena, is in ICU and will undergo tests. He is expected to be under observation for a few days.

His nephew was, till very recently, estranged and a political rival, having broken away six years ago to float his own party, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).  Last week, however, when Bal Thackeray's son Uddhav was admitted to hospital with chest pains and was then diagnosed with three blockages in his heart, Raj rushed back to Mumbai from Alibaug.

That evening Raj drove Uddhav home in his silver Mercedes. At Matoshree, where Bal Thackeray lives with his family, Raj spent half an hour talking with his uncle. He has since made several visits to the Thackeray residence.

Later in the week, when Uddhav went through an angioplasty at Lilavati Hospital, Raj was present through the two-hour process.

Raj has insisted that the new closeness is personal. "It's our personal matter, and you too should note and respect that," he had said last week. But there is intense speculation that this could be the precursor to a possible political reconciliation between the two branches of the family. The split in the Thackeray family meant that the Shiv Sena's vote base split, allowing the Congress and NCP coalition to rule Maharashtra unhindered.

Raj and Uddhav have over the last few years taken potshots at each other in public, with both leaders trying to consolidate the Marathi vote in their favour. Raj's MNS has been growing in stature - in the recent civic elections in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, it did better than expected.

Party workers in the Shiv Sena believe that by presenting a united front along with the BJP, the Thackerays could offer a serious challenge to the incumbent government of the Congress and its partner, Sharad Pawar's NCP. That alliance has seen a serious rift in recent times and analysts now say that 2014, when Maharashtra picks its next government, could be the best time for a united Sena to stage a comeback.
