Sensex above 18,400; Sun Pharma, Cipla, Tata Power up

MUMBAI, Nov 21 (CMC) The Sensex held on to intraday gains and was firmly placed above the 18,400 level on Wednesday, led by gains in realty, banks and technology sectors, even as the European markets opened on a subdued note. 

At 02:20 pm, the 30-share index was at 18,452.77, up 123.45 points or 0.67 per cent. It touched a high of 18,461.88 and a low of 18,309.81 in trade today.

The Nifty was at 5,606.30, up 34.75 points or 0.62 per cent. It touched a high of 5,610.30 and a low of 5,561.40 in trade today. 

The BSE Midcap Index was up 0.40 per cent and the BSE Smallcap Index moved up 0.42 per cent. 

Among the sectoral indices, the BSE Realty Index gained 2.40 per cent, the BSE Bankex moved 1.15 per cent higher and the BSE IT Index advanced 0.93 per cent. The BSE Power Index was down 0.22 per cent. 

Sun Pharmaceuticals (2.40 per cent), CiplaBSE 2.61 % (2.15 per cent), Tata PowerBSE 1.98 % (2.13 per cent), Jindal SteelBSE 1.97 % (2.12 per cent) and ICICI BankBSE 1.92 % (2.04 per cent) were among the Sensex gainers. 

NTPCBSE -3.46 % (1.97 per cent), BHELBSE -2.70 % (1.93 per cent), Hero MotoCorpBSE -1.00 % (1.10 per cent), Bharti AirtelBSE -0.63 % (0.89 per cent) and Maruti SuzukiBSE -0.52 % (0.78 per cent) were among the losers. 

The market breadth was positive on the BSE with 1,412 gainers against 1,307 losers. 

The foreign institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 143.38 crore on Tuesday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange. 

The European markets have opened on a subdued note. The FTSE 100 was down 0.17 per cent, the CAC 40 declined 0.34 per cent and the DAX moved 0.20 per cent lower.
