New Delhi, Dec 10 (CMC) In a clear indication that Rahul Gandhi would be Congress’ next Prime Ministerial candidate, the party on Monday declared that he would lead the party campaign in 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

“Rahul Gandhi would lead the party’s campaign in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Sonia Gandhi would be the supreme leader,” Congress spokesperson PC Chacko said. While Chacko evaded direct reply if Rahul would be named the party’s PM candidate, but there are indications that the issue had been settled within the party. However, Congress seems too cautious about projecting Rahul as the PM candidate, as of now, due to its own sinking graph. The issue (Rahul as PM) will come up after the elections and it
was for the party MPs to decide, Chacko said. Rahul has already been appointed as the head of the party’s poll coordination panel and is likely to be given a bigger responsibility ahead of the ‘Chintan Shivir’ and the All India Congress Committee session January 18-20 at Jaipur, said party sources.

Chacko said that Rahul agreed to assume more responsibilities following the “overwhelming” demand by the party men.
“The party is overwhelmingly in favour of Rahul Gandhi taking a larger responsibility. Earlier, he was not very willing. Now he has agreed to it. He will lead UPA’s election campaign for 2014,” Chacko said. Addressing a public meeting in Vadodara, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Sunday, “Congress is clear on the suitability and capability of party general secretary Rahul Gandhi for the post of Prime Minister. Senior and young party leaders have been projecting him for this post.”
