Gaddafi's death marks start of new era for Libyans: Hillary Clinton
Clean Media Correspondent
Islamabad, Oct 21 (CMC) The death of Muammar Gaddafi marked the start of a new era for Libyan people, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said today as she backed their efforts to embark on building a "new democratic path" in the oil-rich nation.
"The death of Colonel Gaddafi has brought to a close a very unfortunate chapter in Libya's history but it also marks the start of a new era for the Libyan people," Clinton told reporters at a joint news conference with her Pakistani counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar here.
Clinton, who visited the Libyan capital on Tuesday, said that she had seen first-hand "the eagerness of Libyans to begin building a new democracy" in their country.
Following Gaddafi's death, she hoped efforts for building democracy in Libya "can now begin in earnest".
"I want to underscore the commitment of the United States to supporting the Libyan people as a friend and partner as they embark on this new democratic path," Clinton said.
Gaddafi, who ruled Libya for 42 years with an iron hand, was killed yesterday in an exchange of fire between his loyalists and rebels fighters in Sirte, the slain Libyan leader's hometown.
