New Delhi, August 23 (CMC) Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik, facing flak over handling of the August 11 violence at Azad Maidan, has been transferred, Maharashtra home minister RR Patil said on Thursday.
Satyapal Singh has been appointed new police commissioner of the city, said Patil.
Patnaik under political fire for Mumbai violence will be promoted to DG rank and will serve as the managing director of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation.
Maharashtra home department had proposed the transfer of Patnaik.
"The home department had submitted a proposal to transfer Patnaik," a senior official told Clean Media.
The proposal, was submitted three days ago.
Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) demanded Patnaik's resignation over the way he handled the situation during the August 11 violence.
Patnaik had defended his handling of the riot.
Defying the Mumbai police, which refused him permission for a rally from Girgaon Chowpatty to Azad Maidan, MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Tuesday led his supporters' march against the August 11 violence during a demonstration against alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar.
