Chennai, Sept 30 (CMC) Hitting back at West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee over her criticism of UPA government's policies, Union minister V Narayanasamy on Sunday alleged that no industrial activity has taken place in her state or jobs created since she came to power.
"No industrial activity has taken place in state or jobs created since Mamata came to power," Narayanasamy said.
"Centre has to march forward for the purpose of fulfilling the wishes and aspirations of the people", Narayanasamy said on the eve of Trinamool Congress' demonstration in Delhi to protest the decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail, an issue on which it has withdrawn support to the UPA.
Mamata's party Trinamool Congress will stage a protest in Delhi on Monday against the government's decision to allow FDI in retail.
Banerjee had alleged on Saturday that "Looting is on in the name of aam admi and reforms".
"Reforms are meant to usher development for the people. Now-a-days, the trend is whenever any anti-people decision is taken, it is taken in the name of reforms," Banerjee had said in her post in Facebook.

The cancellation of dozens of trains and buses in Telangana region and the arrests of hundreds of protestors reaching the state capital in private vehicles angered the pro-Telangana groups, who alleged that the government was trying to suppress the movement despite giving permission for the march.
Armed personnel from Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) para-military force were deployed at the chief minister's camp office in Begumpet when the Congress MPs and their supporters reached there again after their release.
They squatted on the road as the police refused them permission to go inside the chief minister's residence-cum-office to meet him. The eight MPs were bundled into police vehicles and taken away.

Osmania University, the nerve centre of the movement for separate state, turned into a battle zone with students clashing with police. Students wanted to take out a rally, but were stopped by police at the main gate of the campus.
Raising slogans of Jai Telangana, the students removed barricades and pelted stones at the police personnel. Although police fired teargas shells, hundreds of students were still present on the campus, determined to take out a rally.
Police said that permission was given only for the march at the Necklace Road and that they would not allow any other rally.
Telangana protagonists from various parts of Hyderabad and neighbouring districts started reaching the venue on the bank of Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of the city since Sunday morning. Protestors were trying to take out rallies to reach the Necklace Road.
There was also tension at Secunderabad Clock Tower as leaders and activists of CPI-ML New Democracy were prevented by police from taking out a rally.
 
The Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC), Telangana Rashtra Samithi, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and various organisations of students, employees and lawyers also planned to take out rallies from various places in the city to join the main march at the Necklace Road.
JAC convenor M Kodandaram and leaders of other parties condemned what they called the government's conspiracy to foil the march by cancelling trains and buses from various parts of Telangana to Hyderabad.
They alleged that hundreds of people coming to Hyderabad from various districts were arrested by police.
"On one hand the government has given permission for the march but on the other it is resorting to repressive measures," said Kodandaram.
He said said the repressive measures proved that the government was afraid of the mass movement.

Another Telangana leader and state legislator, N Janardhana Reddy warned that if the government tried to foil the march, they would disrupt the UN global biodiversity meet opening in the city Monday.
Revolutionary balladeer Gaddar reached Telangana Martyrs' Memorial at Gun Park and administered a pledge to protestors that they would achieve the goal of separate state.
"The arrests can never stop the movement," he said.

New Delhi, 30 Sep (CMC): Maintaining strong opposition to entering politics as it is “full of dirt”, Anna Hazare claimed that he did not get answers from Arvind Kejriwal-led group on questions raised by him on how to organise a political alternative.

Hazare, who arrived here this morning and met activists to chalk out the next course of action on an apolitical anti-corruption movement, said the path of “politics is not sacred and it is full of dirt” but the route of agitation is “sacred”.

Contending that a big movement and not politics will give the country its future, the activist said he had told the pro-party group that the route of politics was “not the right direction”.

“I did not give an alternative. When I was told that an alternative has to be given, I said it is a good idea but I asked them to answer my 5-6 questions (on how to provide an alternative). But I did not get those answers,” he told reporters.

Hazare was referring to the questions he raised like how will members of a new party will be selected, where will the money come from and how will the candidates for elections will be selected among others.

The activist’s fresh salvo against Kejriwal came two days after he wrote in a blog that the anti-corruption group split due to “politics” within and not because of any attempts by government.

“If I had to enter elections I would have done it when I would have done it much earlier. I have not even fought Panchayat elections. When I talk about alternative, I am not talking about political alternative,” he said.

He said he will be talking to activists, retired bureaucrats and others in the next couple of days about the next course of action.

“Politics is not the right direction. If politics would given us a bright future, then why India once called a golden bird had to mortgage gold. This country will not get the right future from politics,” he said.

This is his first visit to the capital after his split with Kejriwal. Hazare will return to Ralegan Siddhi tomorrow.

Deputy CM, ministers from Telangana threaten to quit
 

The deputy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and other ministers from Telangana region have threatened to quit for the sake of separate statehood to the region.

Condemning the arrests of Telangana supporters coming to Hyderabad for the Telangana march, deputy chief minister Damodar Rajanarasimha warned that if the people were harmed he would not hesitate to resign.

Ministers K Jana Reddy and B. Saraiah met the deputy chief minister to discuss the latest situation arising out of the arrests of Telangana protestors in various districts. They alleged that the government had gone back on its word to allow peaceful march.

Jana Reddy, who played a key role in obtaining permission for the march, said the time had come for them to make a choice between the ministerial posts and the cause of Telangana.

Fire Sweeps Through 17th-Century Souk of Aleppo, City’s Soul

BEIRUT, (Lebanon) Sept 29 (CMC) Fire swept through the old central souk, or marketplace, of Aleppo, Syria, on Saturday, damaging a vast and well-preserved labyrinth of medieval storehouses, shops, schools and ornate courtyards as fierce clashes between security forces and insurgents vowing to carry out a “decisive battle” for the city continued.

One video shot by antigovernment activists showed a curtain of dark smoke hanging over the center of Aleppo near the old city, a Unesco World Heritage site. Another showed intense, crackling orange flames engulfing heavy wooden doors in what appeared to be one of the market’s arched stone passageways. The activists said they believed that the fire, whose origins were unclear, had destroyed a large portion of the market’s shops overnight, though the claim could not be immediately verified.

For many residents, the souk, the main part of the old city, is its soul. Aleppo, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and Syria’s largest, has been staggering for months under a bloody battle that has reduced some residential areas to rubble, and with no deaths immediately reported from the blaze, that damage pales compared with the recent human toll.

Yet serious damage to an area that Syrians widely consider one of their greatest treasures is likely to stir anger at both sides — each of which blames the other for the destruction in the city — in a conflict that seems mired in stalemate. It could also make the rebels’ latest push in Aleppo backfire politically: Some opponents of President Bashar al-Assad were already incensed on Saturday at insurgents they said had operated conspicuously near the old city.

“Our hearts and minds have been burned in this fire,” said a doctor in Aleppo who gave her name only as Dima. “It’s not just a souk and shops, but it’s our soul, too.”

She said she supported peaceful resistance against Mr. Assad, and pronounced herself “annoyed, annoyed, annoyed” with fighters from the rebel Tawhid Brigade, which announced the offensive on Thursday. The fighters said they were seeking to “liberate” neighborhoods that had remained largely progovernment and were being used as posts from which to attack the opposition.

But in a Skype interview, Dima said the recent fighting cast doubt on both the rebel leaders’ tactical wisdom and their intentions. She called them “performers” who had needlessly provoked the government by posing for pictures outside the souk and the nearby 12th-century mosque — which she worried would now be shelled — and who “talked nonsense.”

“There is no decisive battle,” she said. “There are no liberated areas.”

Brigadier Bashir al-Hajji, the commander of the Tawhid Brigade, said the offensive had worked and that rebels were progressing toward the heart of Aleppo. Rebels and activists said the government had started the blaze by firing incendiary bullets.

He said he had visited the market area, where, he said in a Skype interview, “there’s anger, but anger against Bashar and his collaborators.” He added, “Everybody is angry, trying to save what can be saved from their shops.”

Aleppo’s old souk, much of it dating to the 17th century, is not only an important tourist destination but also a vibrant center of commerce and community, housing vendors of pastries, spices, antiques and crafts. In the sprawling old city, “madrasas, palaces, caravanserais and hammams all form part of the city’s cohesive, unique urban fabric,” the Unesco citation reads.

It was unclear how the fire began, but it came after the most intense fighting across the city in weeks. The government said rebels had attacked on a number of fronts in the city on Friday and had been pushed back with heavy casualties.

Activists said that antigovernment fighters had tried to put out the fire, but that it was difficult because of government snipers in the area, who activists have said set up positions in the city’s 13th-century citadel, which overlooks the souk. The souk’s wooden doors and stores of fabric and other flammable materials would have spread the blaze quickly.

The government news agency SANA did not immediately acknowledge the fire, but reported continuing clashes across Aleppo on Saturday, saying security forces “killed and wounded scores of terrorists,” its designation for its armed opponents.

Dima, the doctor, who lives on the western side of Aleppo, said she believed that the fire had been started by incendiary bullets from government snipers. But she blamed the rebels for approaching the old city, which she said had no government target, and said they seemed more concerned with the number of areas they could seize than with their tactical importance.

“They are not the army of freedom,” she said. “They are the army of spite.”

The claims by both sides could not immediately be verified because of government restrictions on reporting in Syria.

Armed insurgents also tried to enter Homs Province from Lebanon but were repelled by the army, which killed several and drove the rest back into Lebanon, SANA said.

In the southern province of Dara’a, where the uprising began, the Local Coordinating Committees, an activist network, said rebels had seized an air defense battalion on Saturday.

Kaysar Habib, an antigovernment activist reached by Skype in Dara’a, said fighters from the Free Syrian Army, the main umbrella group for the armed opposition, stormed an air defense battalion in the town of al-Ghariya. After heavy fighting, he said, they took control of the battalion, from which civilians and rebels had been fired on.

Mumbai, Sep 29 (CMC) Millions of people in Mumbai and across Maharashtra trooped out on the streets Saturday to bid adieu to the elephant headed-Lord Ganesha at the end of the 10-day Ganeshotsav (festival) amid tight security at the immersion ceremonies, officials said.
The day was marked with colourful revelry among men, women, youth and children, dancing and singing bhajans as over 90,000 big and small idols of Lord Ganesha were taken out since Saturday morning in Mumbai.
Another estimated 400,000 idols were taken out for immersions in the rest of Maharashtra in the state's biggest religious festival.
Besides the traditional immersion hotspots like Girgaum Chowpatty, and beaches at Shivaji Park, Worli, Juhu, Versova, Marve, Gorai, Madh Island, Thane Creek, the idols were immersed at several other spots including wells, lakes, ponds and 20 artificial immersion sites created by the city municipal corporations.
Tight security, traffic and safety arrangements have been made by various agencies to facilitate smooth and incident-free immersions ceremonies during the day.
The Mumbai police have set up a special control room at Girgaum Chowpatty, where a majority of the gigantic idols from south and central Mumbai shall be immersed along with the smaller household idols.
Securitymen atop 37 watch towers were keeping an eye from above at the seaside immersion spots, while Indian Navy and Coast Guard helicopters conducted sorties to ward off any untoward incidents.
According to Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti (BSGSS) President N. Dahibhavkar, the fourth and final phase of immersions Saturday included around 8,500 idols from mandals (committees). Around 1,800 such mandal idols were immersed on the second, fifth and seventh days of the fest.
As many as 350 BSGSS lifeguards are on alert at all the big immersion spots besides 250 BMC lifeguards at 65 major immersion spots.
Nearly 50 percent of another 165,000 smaller household idols that were worshipped during the festival shall be immersed Saturday, Dahibhavkar added.
Over 25,000 police personnel, along with two companies of Rapid Action Force, one company of BSF, four companies of SRPF are on duty besides other agencies and private security groups.
The traffic police has imposed heavy restrictions on vehicular movement to facilitate smooth immersions by closing 37 important roads from 12 noon Saturday till 6 a.m. Sunday. Fifty roads were made one-way, no parking was allowed on 61 roads and heavy vehicles were banned on 13 major roads across the city.
Some of the biggest idols of Lord Ganesh include Lalbaugcha Raja, Ganesh Gullycha Raja, and others which are over 15 feet tall were taken out in huge processions.
The Western Railway, Central Railway will operate special suburban services tonight and BEST services will run special buses to clear the huge rush of devotees returning home after immersions.
Post-immersions, Sunday will be day of cleaning up the city beaches for which school, college students, youths, NGOs and political parties will lend a helping hand to the sanitation workers to clean the city after the conclusion of the festival.

Ahmedabad, Sept 29 (CMC) The CBI today filed a charge sheet in a special court here in the 2006 Tulsi Prajapati fake encounter case in which former Minister of State for Home and Chief Minister Narendra Modi's close aide Amit Shah has been named along with 19 others.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate A Y Dave, while accepting the charge sheet, has kept the issue of taking cognisance pending till the court verifies the document and kept further hearing on October 10.

On August 4, the CBI had filed the charge sheet of the case in Danta court naming Amit Shah, among the 20 accused for the offences of murder, criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence and others.

The High Court, in its September 25 order on petitions filed by some of the accused objecting to the filing of the charge sheet in Danta, Palanpur, had held that the special CBI court in Ahmedabad is the competent court, where the chargesheet had to be filed.

The objection raised by the accused and then IGP CID crime Geetha Johri, former State DGP P C Pande, Dy SP R K Patel, Rajkumar Pandian and Amit Shah, was rejected by JMFC Geeta Ahir and was held that the Danta court has the jurisdiction to take cognisance of the charge sheet.

Following this, they had challenged the decision before the High Court, which had directed the CBI to take the chargesheet and all other documents related to the case and bring it to the special CBI court in Ahmedabad.

Shah, who is also the prime accused in Sohrabuddin fake encounter and murder of his wife Kauser Bi, has been named accused number one and the kingpin of the conspiracy in the fake encounter case of Prajapati, who was killed near Chhapri village in Danta, Palanpur on December 28, 2006.

On September 27, the Supreme Court had rejected the CBI plea seeking the cancellation of the bail granted to Amit Shah, a BJP MLA, by Gujarat High Court in 2010 in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and allowed him to enter the state during the time of upcoming assembly elections.

Today, when CBI produced the charge sheet before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate A Y Dave, some of the accused, including Amit Shah, had objected to it.

"We believe that the CBI has not filed all the documents, which includes our application opposing the charge sheet as CBI has not taken sanctions under section 197 of the CrPC mandatory for arraigning any public servant into a criminal case," said advocate Mitesh Amin, who represents Amit Shah.

The device is capable of delivering voice, video and data services using 3G and Voice Over Internet Protocol ( VoIP) services.

The Triple Play 7 inch Tablet PC, IRA ICON is a 800X480 pixel full angle TFT LCD capacitive multi-touch screen that runs on Android 4.0 with 1.2 GHz processor and a non-standard 1GB of RAM. It is powered by built in 3G Sim Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The IRA ICON supports calling features 3G, Wi-Fi and bluetooth connectivity and also comes with built-in stereo speakers and a microphone. The IRA Icon is slim and weighs less than half a kilo.

New Delhi, Sept 29 (CMC) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday stated the process of reforms was an ongoing one, adding the government would be able to handle the concerns of coalition partners over decisions such as those on diesel prices and the cap on subsidised liquified petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders.

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has strengthened its stand to stick to the reform path by highlighting the need to revive economic growth and reduce the subsidy burden. The Supreme Court’s recent statement that the government didn’t have to necessarily auction natural resources came as a shot in the arm for the UPA.

Singh’s new found assertiveness, evident in his recent televised address to the nation, was again on display on Saturday, as he adroitly fielded questions from reporters, a shift for a prime minister who had earlier wanted his “silence to speak for itself.”

On Saturday, on the sidelines of the swearing-in of the country’s new chief justice, Altamas Kabir, Singh said, “We will do what is good for the country....Reforms is not a one-off process.”

Singh’s new-found assertion stems from the robust backing of the Congress party and its president Sonia Gandhi, despite the Trinamool Congress withdrawing support to the government. At a recent UPA coordination committee meeting, when allies such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) demanded steps such as increasing the cap on LPG cylinders from six to 12 be reconsidered, an adamant government refused to yield.

On the concerns of alliance partners, Singh said these would be discussed.

DMK representative T R Baalu and NCP chief Sharad Pawar had told the Congress-led UPA government such decisions might affect electoral prospects. Pawar had also spoken of the “vast impact” such unpopular decisions could have. Responding to these statements, Singh on Saturday said, “We are far away from elections.”

On Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee’s recent attack on him, he said, “I am not bitter about anything.” However, the Bengal unit of the Congress is considering filing a defamation case against Banerjee for mimicking the Singh at a press conference.

Yesterday, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had said the decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail was “aimed at pleasing the US.” Modi also alluded to Sonia Gandhi’s visits to the US as being linked to the UPA’s decision on FDI.

Responding to this, Singh said, “What has the US got to do with this? We are not a country to be dictated by others.” Ever since Singh had backed the nuclear treaty with the US in the face of stiff opposition from many quarters, many have accused him of acting at the behest of the US.

Mumbai, Sep 29 (CMC) Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan Saturday accepted the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who also held the finance, energy and planning portfolios, an official said.

Pawar's resignation, submitted to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan last Tuesday, takes immediate effect.
In his place, the governor agreed to Chavan's request to allocate the finance and planning portfolios to Jayant Patil, who also holds rural development, and the energy portfolio to Rajesh Tope, who is also minister for higher and technical education.

The developments followed an hour-long meeting between Sankaranarayanan and Chavan at Raj Bhavan.
This draws curtains on a political crisis which started last Tuesday with Pawar's resignation. All 19 Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ministers later offered to quit the Congress-led Democratic Front government.

NCP chief and union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, while announcing that his nephew Ajit Pawar's resignation has been accepted, Friday said the resignation offers of all other 19 ministers had been rejected.
Ajit Pawar (53) abruptly quit the state cabinet Tuesday amid allegations of arbitrarily doling out irrigation contracts worth over Rs. 20,000 crore, when he was the water resources minister between 1999-2009.

All 19 NCP ministers in the cabinet also followed suit and offered their resignations to state chief Madhukarrao Pichhad, sparking a political crisis.
However, ending the political stalemate, Sharad Pawar also urged Chavan to bring out a 'white paper' on the state irrigation scenario.

New Delhi, Sept 29 (CMC) Anna Hazare will be in Delhi on Sunday for the first time after his split with Arvind Kejriwal for a meeting with his supporters and activists to chalk out the future course of action. Hazare's meeting comes against the backdrop of his blog posting in which he put the blame for separation 
squarely on Kejriwal-led pro-party group.

The meeting is likely to be attended by activists Medha Patkar, Dr Sunilam and others, sources said. Hazare will return to Ralegan Siddhi on Monday.

In his blog yesterday, Hazare said "politics has split" the anti-corruption movement and the pro-party group has gone against his will.

Hazare also decried efforts to link him with some parties and "communal" outfits, in an apparent reference to allegations that he is closing ranks with RSS through yoga guru Ramdev to run the anti-corruption movement after the split with the Kejriwal-led group.

"Those who favour party have been saying that if Anna says, then they will not form a party. But despite that, they have decided to go ahead with the plan against my decision. Sometimes, it is also said they were forming the party because Anna has decided so. This is not right," he said.

In a new blog posting, the 75-year-old activist also said the movement was not divided in the past two years despite efforts by UPA government.

But, he added, now it has split even without the government putting in any effort as one group wanted to take the electoral route.

NEW DELHI, Sept 29 (CMC) The government needs to subsidise kerosene and food for poor, former finance secretary Vijay Kelkar said observing that the committee on fiscal consolidation headed by him was not against elimination of all subsidies. 

"I agree with people who argue that we cannot eliminate subsidies, we shouldn't eliminate subsidies. Food subsidy is defensible. For undernourished children or lactating mothers food subsidy is not only defensible, it is ethically right and morally correct", Kelkar said in an interview to Clean Media. 

"Subsidy must be continued for kerosene as long as it is affordable (for the government)," he added. 

Responding to the report of Kelkar committee, the government had earlier said that panel's suggestions on removal of subsidy were contrary to government's policy of protecting poor. 

"The government is of the view that in a developing country where a significant proportion of the population is poor, a certain level of subsidies is necessary and unavoidable, and measures must be taken to protect the poor and vulnerable sections of the society", Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) secretary Arvind Mayaram had said. 

Mayaram had further said Committee's recommendation of withdrawal of certain subsidies is in divergence with the stated policy of the government. 

The final view on the recommendations of the committee, set up by Finance Minister P Chidambaram to suggest fiscal consolidation road map, will be taken by the government after receiving feedback from stake holders. 

The Kelkar committee wanted that implementation of the Food Security Bill to provide cheap grains to persons below poverty line, be "appropriately phased" in view of difficult fiscal challenges. 

The government's proposed Food Security Bill which is being given the final touches by the Cabinet is estimated to cost the exchequer at least Rs 1.19 lakh crore by way of subsidy. 

In case of food and fertiliser subsidies, it wanted the government to increase the urea price and raise issue price of foodgrains at ration shops. 

Kelkar, in his interview, said that he has suggested phasing out of subsidy on diesel and LPG. 

"We mentioned to remove inequitable subsidies like LPG. LPG subsidies do not go to our people who fall in the low income bracket," Kelkar said. 

The Committee has suggested phased elimination of subsidy on diesel and LPG in the next four years and reduction in kerosene subsidy by one-third by 2014-15. 

It had cautioned that in absence of these measures, the fiscal deficit of the government could shoot up to 6.1 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product ( GDP) in the current financial year. It can be contained to 5.2 per cent with the proposed reforms, the report had said.

New Delhi, Sept 29 (CMC) As the Congress seized the opportunity of the widening rift between Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal by saying that the latter used the anti-corruption crusader for his political ambitions, Hazare also declared that he will no more resort to fasting to press for his demands. "Now onwards I will not undertake fast. In future I will fight for my causes through agitations," he said.
Hazare said he would continue to work to send "clean" people to Parliament. He also said that a large number of retired IAS officers have shown their willingness to join his movement for a corruption-free India.
Expressing full faith in the country's youth, Hazare asked them not to be pessimistic about future of the country. Hazare had gone for fast thrice last year (twice in New Delhi and once in Mumbai) to press for a strong Lokpal Bill.

The Gandhian again sat on a protest fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi in July this year. Earlier, he had undertaken hunger strikes on several occasions in Maharashtra on issues related to corruption and transparency in governance.
Hazare said he is deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, for whom fasting was a spiritual weapon.
Meanwhile, the Congress targeted Kejriwal by saying that his real intentions have been known by the public. "Now it is clear to everyone that Anna wanted to run campaign for Lokpal but Arvind Kejriwal and others used him for making political party. Now it is clear that they had the intentions of using Anna for their political ambitions," Congress leader Jagdambika Pal said while reacting to Hazare's blog.

On the next course of his movement, he said his movement now needs an office in Delhi to coordinate its affairs. "But because of lack of money, we are not able to find one. I have not taken even Rs 5 from the donations which came in Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Maidan. I kept all the money with IAC so that it will be spent on the movement," he said.

Her comments came shortly after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh indicated that the Centre may continue with the reforms process and expressed willingness to discuss issues with the allies. "We will do what is good for the country... reforms are not one-off process," he said in Delhi.

Congress under more pressure after Mamata's exit?
Six Trinamool Congress ministers had submitted their resignations on September 21 to the Prime Minister in protest against allowing FDI in retail, diesel price hike and the cap on subsidised cooking gas cylinders. The party had also submitted a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee formally withdrawing Trinamool's support to the UPA II government.

Mumbai, Sept 29 (CMC) The BSE benchmark Sensex today jumped by 183 points to end at a 15-month high on buying in auto, FMCG and metal stocks amid strong global cues and a surging rupee. After gaining 269 points at the outset, the Sensex closed up 183.24 points, or 0.99 per cent, at 18,762.74, a level last seen on July 7. The 30-share barometer has gained 8.2 per cent this month.

The broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty climbed to psychological 5,700 level by adding 53.80 points, to end at 5,703.30. It touched the day's high of 5,735.15.

A firming global trend and the rupee rising to five-month high against the dollar helped the market commence the new settlement in the derivatives segment on a promising note.

Brokers said the sentiment bolstered on sustained foreign funds inflow amid expectation that the government’s policy reforms will revive investments and economic growth.

The Sensex has risen 4.7 per cent since September 13 when the government hiked diesel prices and opened retail and aviation sectors to foreign direct investments.

There were more supporting factors like firm foreign markets on optimism Spanish and French measures to reduce budget deficits might help in resolving the region’s debt crisis, brokers said.

In 30-BSE index components, 25 stocks closed with gains. Reliance Industries, HDFC Ltd, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Mahindra and Tata Motors were among the major gainers.

The current rally was led by auto, consumer durables and FMCG stocks.

The auto sector index gained the most by 1.89 per cent to 10,413.19 followed by consumer durables by 1.63 per cent to 6,939.84. FMCG index rose by 1.42 per cent to 5,507.46.

Mumbai, Sept 28 (CMC) Bulls are having a field day on Dalal Street, which houses the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) building, as the Sensex is fast approaching the 19,000 mark.

On Friday, the 30-stock index of Asia’s oldest stock exchange gained nearly one per cent or 183.24 points, to close at 18,762.74, on expectations that the government will continue its reforms momentum and after a tough Spanish budget buoyed Asian markets. The government’s assurance to stick to its borrowing plan for the second half of this year also helped the sentiment.
The Sensex touched a high of 18,869.94 during the day’s trade before paring some of the gains. All the sectoral indices on the BSE, except realty, ended in the green, indicating overall strength in the market.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the 50-stock Nifty index added 53.80 points, or 0.95 per cent, to close at 5,703.30, its highest close since July 7, 2011. This month’s 7.6 per cent rise is the biggest monthly gain for the Sensex this year since January, when the index had jumped 11 per cent.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 19,261.50 crore ($3.5 billion) this month as the government took bold steps like raising diesel prices and opening retail and aviation sectors for foreign firms.

Strategists at brokerages like Morgan Stanley, Citi, Deutsche Bank and Ambit have increased their Sensex targets this month enthused by government action. Australia’s Macquarie is the latest to join the bandwagon.

Its India strategists on Friday lifted their Nifty target to 6,600, based on 15 times estimated earnings for FY14.

“Recent initiatives by the government have made it possible for GDP growth to return to around seven per cent levels and this optimism has driven our uptick in target multiple from 13.8 times to 15 times (for the Nifty),” said Macquarie’s Rakesh Arora and Arjun Bhattacharya in a note to clients.

Power sector reforms, interest rate cuts and infrastructure spending are the key themes to play, according to Macquarie.

Next week, investors will keenly await the outcome of the final report by a panel headed by Parthasarathi Shome, reviewing a controversial set of taxes for foreign investors. In its draft report early this month, the panel had suggested delaying implementation of General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR) by three years and also removing the short-term capital gains tax.

However, experts say, investors still need to watch out for developments in the Euro zone.

“Euro zone will continue to grab headlines amid concern about the precarious fiscal health of some of its members,” said Amar Ambani, head of research at IIFL.
