Mumbai, Nov 24 (CMC) The late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s ashes were immersed by son Uddhav at the Gateway of India on Friday. Also, Sena leaders immersed the ashes at several holy spots and water bodies across the state.

Uddhav was accompanied by wife Rashmi and son Aditya as he immersed his father’s ashes in the Arabian Sea. Even though Uddhav’s estranged cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray also paid his respects to the urn before the immersion, he did not stay for the actual immersion, an MNS leader said.

Urns containing Thackeray’s ashes had been given to the party’s state, district and division chiefs. These were displayed for darshan for Sainiks to pay their respects on Wednesday and Thursday and were immersed on Friday at many places including holy spots and water bodies in Raigad, Ratnagiri, Nashik, Pune, Sinhdudurg, Aurangabad, Nanded, Gujarat and Kanyakumari.
In Nashik, the urn was carried in a procession that was led warkaris singing bhajans. The procession saw a large number of Shiv Sainiks as well as members and leaders of the MNS and BJP. It reached the banks of river Godavari by noon, where pundits performed the rituals.

The ashes were immersed in the Asthi Kund adjacent to the Godavari. It is a small 3x3 pond about 100 feet deep. It is said that when ashes are immersed there, the soul of the departed rests in peace. In Maleagon, around 5,000 Shiv Sainiks got their heads shaved to pay homage to the departed soul.
