MPs suggest simplification of the Hindi language

New Delhi, Nov 18 (CMC): Hindi should be made simpler to increase its ability to serve as a link language, some Members of Parliament have suggested.
"Some Members stated that Sanskritisation of Hindi will limit its ability to become a link language. Thus the effort should be towards making Hindi simpler rather than more Sanskritised," said a statement issued by the HRD Ministry.
The members put forth their suggestions at a meeting of the Consultative Committee of Parliament of HRD Ministry yesterday.
The meeting deliberated on 'development of Indian languages, protection and preservation of endangered languages and classical languages' with HRD Minister Kapil Sibal stating that the budget allocated for protection and preservation was not adequate, the statement noted.
One of the MPs, the statement said, suggested that besides the three-language formula, students could be encouraged to study a fourth local minor language and be encouraged with scholarships for the same.
Some MPs also pointed out that the institutional arrangement for Urdu protection and popularization is not adequate and much more needs to be done.
They also said that Urdu needs to be linked with employment and efforts could be made to impart technical education in Urdu, the statement added.
The MPs were informed that information about 29,000 translations is already available in the database that National Translation Mission has developed and information on another 70,000 titles is expected to be digitized by March 2012.
