Life is cheaper than cereals!
We have grown hearing the slogan, ‘Mera Desh Mahan’ and saying ‘I am proud to be an Indian’. Childhood onwards our parents and teachers have taught us to be proud of our country. We try to teach the same values and norms to our children. I, being a mother, am trying to inculcate the same values in my five year old son.
Today I became harsh and later speechless as making him memorize two sentences, India is my motherland and I am proud to be an Indian, as after few repetitions, he refused to repeat, saying, “Mamma Hum Bharat Desh Mein Rahate Hein, wo to theekh Hain lekin Hum Log Proud Kyo Hain?” I explained the reasons for being proud in my own way. Continuing with his curious queries, suddenly he said referring to an earlier incident, “to wo ladki bar-bar tumse paise kyon mang rahi thi, kyon bol rahi thi, madam ji, bahut bhookh lagi hai, kuchh khila dijiys, paisa de dijiye”. At that moment, I tried to explain him till he seemed to be satisfied but I myself was not satisfied. His question haunted me again and again. I started questioning myself, should I be proud to be an Indian? I have my own reasons to be proud, but certain questions are really inexplicable.
We are proud to be in such a beautiful country. We are proud to be inheriting such a glorious tradition. We are proud to be having such a rich philosophy. We are proud to be having such a great variety of flora and fauna. We are certainly proud to be in a democracy. We are proud to be having our own government but we certainly can never be proud of being poor, being corrupt, being unaccountable, being insensitive to the poor, having the worst kind of education system propounded by the Britishers and the worst kind of political people and the so called leaders of modern age who are shamelessly unaccountable to the society.
It has been sixty four years when we first saw the rising sun in an independent India. Since then many governments have changed but the fate of the country has seldom changed. They had their own ideology of governing the nation. But none had the ideology to feed every stomach, to shelter every head, to cure every infant, to educate every individual, to give employment to every Indian, so on and so forth, the list is not long but endless..! Not much has changed. Earlier there were the foreign people ruling us, now it is our own people, in the name of the democratic government. But the methodology has not changed. It was autocratic and it remains autocratic.
A nation where corruption is prevalent in all nooks and corners, inflation at every level, security at no place, violence inside and outside, beggars on every footpath, foeticide in every village, murderers and rapes in the face of family and friends and much more to count...,who says India is not a developing nation? India is a developing nation. It is developing in rampant corruption, crime, bribery, violence, eve teasing, beggary, sexual assault, muddy war, railway accidents, and so on……….
It is a place where human body dead or alive can be sold or purchased in a much cheaper price than cereals! On this situation, I am reminded of a couplet:
“Chand rupaye mein bikte hain yaha insaan ke imaan,
Kaun Kahata hai mehangai bahut adhik hai mere yaar!
Ham us desh ke waasi hain jis desh mein Ganga bahati hai..!
