Chennai, August 06 (CMC) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has said her party, the AIADMK, will support Jaswant Singh's candidature for Vice President. Declaring her support for the BJP-backed candidate, Ms Jayalalithaa said, "I have known Jaswant Singh for 28 years. It is a mark of my personal regard."
"In a democracy there should be opposition," she added.
The vice presidential election will be held on August 7 with UPA nominee and Vice President Hamid Ansari facing NDA candidate Jaswant Singh. Members of both Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha 545 and Rajya Sabha 245) form the Electoral College and Mr Ansari is expected to win comfortably.
On Sunday, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has announced that it would abstain from voting. "After consultation with parliament members and senior leaders, the party has decided to abstain from voting in the vice-presidential elections," BJD President and chief minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters in Bhubaneswar.
The BJD and the AIADMK were the first to name PA Sangma as their candidate for the presidential poll last month. The BJD has 21 MPs, 14 in Lok Sabha and seven in Rajya Sabha. The AIADMK has nine MPs in the Lok Sabha and five in the Rajya Sabha.
