BELITTLING A HISTORICAL DECISION

The first and of course the last day of the winter session of the U.P Assembly passed a landmark decision in an unlawful way. The winter session of the U.P Government began on 21st Nov and it also ended on the same day with not more than ten minutes’ proceedings amidst lot of hue and cry.

The session began at about 11a.m with Vande Matram and postponed for an hour due to the pandemonium created by the opposition. When it again began at 12: 20 p.m in the presence of the Chief Minister Madam Mayawati, banners were shown and slogans were raised aloud by the opposition. Amidst the uproar, the Government within two minutes passed the historical bill of U.P division by a voice vote on Monday and the assembly session was adjourned sine die. A historical decision to divide the state in four parts, Pashchim Pradesh, Awadh, Bundelkhand and the Poorvanchal.

That’s how Maya made an earnest endeavour to play her last master stroke giving no chance to the opposition to make its point, pushing it flat on earth.

Mayawati ji, you as well as the public, both know very well that it was a political gimmick. No matter, how much explanation you give, you cannot befool hundreds of millions of Indians. It was a publicity stunt. Why don’t you accept it? After all there’s nothing wrong in it. A dying person does everything to save himself. (Marta kya na karta). The same way it was explicit that in view of the coming state assembly elections Mayawati was desperate to do something innovative and she passed the resolution to divert the attention of all in an attempt to retain the power in the state.

Should U.P be divided into four states is a debatable issue. But the way of passing the bill in haste was certainly unlawful. None of the members were given a chance to put forth their views. The bill in no way reflects the opinion of the state. So a people’s representative in a democratic country used an undemocratic method to pass a ‘democratic bill.’ It is also against the fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution for the citizens of the country.

Mayawati was certainly in hurry to throw the ball into the Center’s court as promised earlier. She is hardly bothered about the means she used, the way the bill was adopted by the cabinet and ultimately the propriety of adopting it in the assembly. She was determined to fulfill her promises (Vada to nibhaya na). Public must now realize her concern towards her people and their development.
Agar aap nahi samajhte hain to ye aapki galati hai, kyon Mayawati ji, theek kah rahi hoon na main?.”

The haste shown in passing the historical bill is now a history in itself. Something which could have been a landmark legislation has turned out to be a damp squib process. Had it been done in a democratic manner, respecting the sentiments of people and allowing them to use their rights of expression, 21st Nov 2011 would have been a historical day in the political history of Uttar Pradesh. But this act of the ruling party has undeniably demeaned a historical day. This is Maya’s way of belittling her people, the system, the legislature and a historical day!
