SC Order on SPOs Complied With: Chhattisgarh CM

New Delhi, Nov 16 (CMC) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh today said there are no Special Police Officers (SPOs) in his state now as they have been absorbed as 'special auxiliary force' to combat the Left wing extremists.
"We have dissolved SPO positions. All they have been absorbed as special auxiliary force and they are not SPOs now. Permanent recruitment procedure, training, education and all (other things)...Hundred per cent we have done as per the directions of the Supreme Court," Singh said.
Singh was reacting to today's order of the apex court in which it has said that its July 5 order terming the appointment of tribal youths as SPOs is "unconstitutional" will apply only to Chhattisgarh.
The Chief Minister said the new Act allows the state to give them proper training, education and other basic infrastructure to combat the Red Terror as per the directions of the Supreme Court.
"Based on special provisions of the Chhattisgarh Police Act which was an old Act, the erstwhile SPOs have 25-25 per cent of state and centre share. But now based on the directives of the court, we have absorbed them. Now we don't have any SPOs," he said.
In its July 5 order, the Supreme Court had said that the eligibility criteria including the educational qualification and training of the tribals to combat Maoists goes against the provisions of statutes and the Constitution.
It had said that creation of Koya Commandos and Salwa Judum was in violation of the Constitution.
