National Pride Dominated By Vote Politics

It is a matter of great dishonour but quite true that in the largest democracy of the world the game of vote politics gets precedence over the pride for the nation. The game of vote politics in India is so deep rooted and strong that it can even rid you of your most heinous crime. Yes I am talking about Mohammad Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri terrorist, who conspired in the game of hide and seek with other Pakistani terrorists to blow the Indian Parliament on 13th Dec 2001, however they did not succeed in their motive. On that sad day for our democracy Afzal Guru’s conspiracy not only hit the symbol of pride of the nation but also took many lives.

A decade has passed since the unfortunate incident had occurred but those deceased warrior souls of security forces and their families have still not got justice. How can they, when the conspirer of the dreaded act is still alive? It is well known that he was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of India in 2004. The sentence was scheduled to be carried out on 20th October 2006. But Afzal was given a stay on execution and remains on death row.

Undoubtedly the incident of attack on the temple of our democracy, the parliament, resulted in heavy casualties, casualty of not only life but also national esteem. An attack on pride of the nation has traumatized every Indian. We and our Government well know that the collective conscience of the society will only be satisfied if the capital punishment awarded to the offender is executed and the other top Pakistani offenders who conspired for the attack sitting in Pakistan are also brought to justice in India.

But the question is will our so called guardians and protectors have the guts to punish the offenders. The answer is a BIG NO! Had they been so courageous, neither he would have been on death row for the past several years nor we would have been forced to raise such a shameful issue?

SO, this is the game of vote politics. This vote politics has even belittled the verdict of top Judiciary. How could he dare to give a mercy plea to the president of the country?  Even if has done so in the interest of natural justice, I don’t think that the president of the nation is not capable enough to decide on the issue for so long.

Madam President, on one hand you have your own people seeking justice and on the other you have to take care of the vote politics for your government. Whom will you favour? However Justice delayed is justice denied still the entire nation looks at you with hopes in their eyes and conviction in their mind that one day the ‘truth will prevail.’

It’s really high time to say:

“Ho gayi hai peer parvat si, phighalani chahiye,
Iss Himalay se koi nayi Ganga Nikalani chahiye,
Mere seene mein na sahi, tere seene mein hi sahi,
Ho kahin bhi aag, lekin aag jalani chahiye!”
