Poll schedule out; UP to have 7-phase elections

New Delhi, Dec 24 (CMC): The Election Commission on Saturday announced the schedule for Assembly polls to be held in five states early next year. 

According to Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi, Uttar Pradesh, with 403 constituencies, will go to elections in seven phases, beginning February 4. 

The second phase will be held on February 8, third phase on February 11, fourth phase on February 15, fifth phase February 19, sixth phase on February 23, and seventh and last phase on February 28.

Uttarakhand, with 70 constituencies, will have single phase elections on January 30. 

Punjab, with 117 constituencies, will go to polls in single phase on the same day, i.e. January 30. 

Both Goa and Manipur will also have single-phase polls. Elections will be held in Goa, with 60 constituencies, on March 3. Manipur, with 40 constituencies, will go to polls on January 28. 

The counting for all states will be held on March 4.

The model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect. 

Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used for polling in all five states.
